(For what it's worth) I took Amtrak into D.C. just after 9/11 and before folks got out at Union Station, the cops came on board and searched my bag for no reason.
You can take that as good news or bad news.
I suppose that depends on what they found in your bag.

The funniest part was after they found nothing incriminating, a hardened 50 year old D.C. cop insisted on stuffing my underwear back into my bag after he yanked them out of the side pocket.
I guess he felt kinda stupid after he frisked me and thought the pack of smokes in my jacket pocket was a pistol ;)
