Immigration Reform on Bush Agenda
Washington Post ^ | December 24, 2003 | Mike Allen

Posted on 12/23/2003 7:56:18 PM PST by sarcasm

< SNIP >

Lobbyists working with the White House said Bush is developing a plan that would allow immigrants to cross the border legally if jobs are waiting for them. The sources said the administration also wants to provide a way for some undocumented workers in the United States to move toward legal status.

Bush will try to make the plan more palatable to conservatives by including stricter entry controls, including increased use of technology at the border and steps toward better enforcement of current visa restrictions and reporting requirements, sources said.

< SNIP >

The White House plan is being designed by Bush's senior adviser, Karl Rove, in consultation with the domestic policy staff. Sources said the White House's biggest concern is that the new mechanism not penalize people who had followed the law and reward those who had not. McCain's plan, which was introduced in the House by Reps. Jim Kolbe (R-Ariz.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), tries to mitigate that problem by creating a new type of visa for previously undocumented workers who would be allowed to live in the United States legally for three years. Then the workers could apply for the temporary worker visa, which would be the path to a green card, or legal permanent residency. That would amount to a three-year advantage for those who entered legally.

You're seriously equating illegal entry, and most likely tax evasion and document fraud to a traffic violation?

Waiting for the Repubs to take back the Senate in 2004 and stop the filibusters. It is going to be glorious to behold. :^)

So long as Republicans are painlessly rewarded for this appeasement or that, dream on.

The road to a conservative judiciary is not paved with millions of Amnesties for Illegals.

Do you really think it's feasible to round up and deport 12 million illegals?Don't need to. Announce that beginning in 60 days, illegals will be arrested, and sentenced to 6 months labor clearing brush and cutting firetrails etc, prior to their deportation. After a few thousand arrests, the rest will beat feet for the border. No need to round up 12 million, they will deport themselves.

Do you really think it's politically palatable to put the army on the Mexican border and have them machine gun down anyone trying to cross illegally?Asinine straw man arguement. Nobody needs to put the Army on the border or machine gun anyone. Just give the current BP real rules of engagement, not Keystone Kops "don't pursue" ROE which they presently endure, which are designed to ensure their failure.

Do you really think Mexicans will stop coming as long as American companies keep hiring them?

They will stop coming when /1/ the free welfare, health care, tuition etc are cut off. /2/ they know they will be arrested, sentenced to perform labor, and will only then be deported.

They will stop coming when we stop providing them incentives to come. This can be done by executive order in one day.

And of course, it wouldn't hurt to jail some CEOs of meat packing plants etc.

"I think he was referring to the lesser paid jobs, picking lettuce, etc."

Wrong. You are mimicking the Communist argument. Congrats.

Well, I personally am not a fan of asset forfeiture. I will admit, though, that if you want cooperation from the local police, let 'em get a whiff of that forfeiture money, and there will be no holding them back.

"but most of us (the Bush base) will crawl over broken glass to vote him a second term."

Not 'the base', but the BOUGHT.

How have we been bought? Tax Cuts?
Perhaps you would prefer to vote for "please raise our taxes" Dean.

You should be locked up if you ever exceeded the speed limit. Hypocrite.

Do you have any idea how many laws illegal aliens are breaking? How about document forgery and fraud for starters. To compare that to speeding tickets is a desperate attempt to excuse some serious lawbreaking.

Yes...he is. And following his logic, you are a hypocrite if you feel murderers should be jailed whilst traffic speeders are merely ticketed.

"republicrat" - 1) A nominal or moderate member of either the Republican or Democratic party who strays from party ideals.

Correct. The so-called Republicans who proposed this "immigration reform" have indeed strayed from party ideals. That is precisely what I implied. Do you have an argument with this, or is your nose too far up the President's ass to notice.

That is of no importance to Jorge. See my post #108 to get an idea of his warped logic.

"We would be better off with Dean in the White House and a vigorous opposition in the GOP Congress."

I tend to agree.. a very conservative friend of mine once told me years ago, we are far better off with differing parties in the presidency and congress/senate.. at least the Republicans will stand up and fight for what is right. WHERE oh WHERE are the paleo conservatives? Welcome to the USSA.

Is a political/media nightmare somehow more to be feared than a real-world cultural and societal cohesion nightmare?

I'm on (what I assume is) your side. I am opposed to illegal immigrants. I'm in favor of doing something about it. What's missing is a realistic, effective, politically acceptable solution.

What I'm getting at is you may have many choices I guess but only two real options as to who will be the ultimate winner in a Presidential race as they current exist..... either the Republican or Democrat. No 3rd party candidate has the numbers to garner the 270 Electoral College votes at this time. Perot got some 19% of the national vote but Zero Electoral College votes.... In most all choices in life very few if any are exactly equal. Thus one has to be some better than the other even if only miniscule...

Mahmoud Abouhalima, one of the masterminds of the 93 WTC bombing, was a citizen as the result of Reagan's amnesty program. He stated that he was a vegetable picker. Never picked a vegetable in his life, but came close to knocking the WTC down the 1st time around.

Every AQ operative will have fake credentials and work history and will become legit ASAP.

How's THAT for starters!

In the interest of fairness and equality then, I propose we execute crooks for everything above Jaywalking.

The "correct" policy is so obvious (to wit, dealing intelligently with the obvious implications of a mobile planet, with a global economy), and so odious to the special interests (illegal alien employer companies, labor unions, Hispanic politicians, consumers that benefit from the cheap labor pool), that it won't really even happen. Instead, it will remain a largely laissez faire global labor market, and the only ace in the hole, is that the supply of Hispanics is being staunched due to demographics, and well, then we can chat about the hordes of Chinese coming in, and Indians, and well, whatever.
