Long Beach "Large Caliber Ban" Defeated

On 11/4, the Long Beach City Council passed the FIRST READING of the .50 cal ban ordinance. However, the SECOND READING was voted down on 12/16, and the ordinance placed on "indefinite hold".

To quote one of NRA's attorneys, this vote represents "snatching victory from the jaws of defeat... Please now turn your attention to Contra Costa County, scheduled to consider it in January. We need to keep up the momentum!"

On the NRA Members' Council's email list this morning, NRA's top CA attorney Chuck Michel noted this victory has state-wide implications as another attack on .50-cals is expected from the legislature next year. 2003 marks the second year we've beaten back this atrocity at the state-level (this year it didn't even get out of committee!). These local defeats indicate gun control CAN be defeated whereever gun-owners work together to fight it - at the state OR local level. You can become more involved and hook-up with other NRA members in your area at:

Chuck also reminds us to now focus on Contra Costa County, where the same ill-advised action is being attempted (and where a freshly-drafted county .50 ban has yet to emerge from the county attorney's office, now mysteriously delayed OVER TWO MONTHS!). See http://NRAMembersCouncils.com/contracosta/.

Gun-owners have definitely turned a corner in California - 2003 was the first time in over 5 years we've actually passed some pro-gun laws WHILE defeating the anti-gun ones. We even forced them to compromise on SB-489 (the only bad bill they were able to squeeze through - and it was close!). http://NRAMembersCouncils.com/caspecial/sum2003.shtml

"why do people NEED a .50 cal "

Cause I got some real big squirrels and other varmints in my back yard that I gotta kill, and this is no f*ing business of the government, that's why.

"Carlos Hathcock nailed a gooner a 2500 yd. Clean Kill from hill 55"

He did that with a scope mounted M2, right? Or did he have one of the earliest .50 cal rifles?

One more question please, assuming it was with a M2, was this from his lair in the bush or was he on a firebase? It's hard to imagine humping an M2 in the bush.

Because the feds have it. I'd get an M1a2 Abrams/Rheinmetall 120mm hybrid if I could

we'd need the whole tank, of course.

It was a scoped M2 and he fired from a firebase.

Took a VC off a bicycle if I remember correctly.

Hell of a shot.

Why is there a vintage .69 caliber Model 1777 Charleville flintlock musket hanging on my wall?

Why did they also make and use massive caliber handguns over 225 years ago?

Oh those French arms dealers again!

Because it's a lot more fun than firecrackers?

If I had the frivolous spare cash, I'd have one. Bet ya can go to the local gravel pit and bust some big rocks in two with a .50.

Ya dumb politicians, it's called....FUN!

The fact that the .50 bothers politicians makes me know it's a good thing. :)

If the muzzle blast downrange of a .50AE is anything like the muzzle blast behind the pistol, I'd think the blast would incapacitate a lot of attackers even if the bullet missed them completely. I don't believe a blank-firing gun could be made that loud.
