Correct...but if the party is in tatters, she steps in the day after election day, takes control,, and assuems the mantle of candidate..and deflects all challengers...Hillary doesn't want to go the primary route...she wants to be annointed...she becomes the putative 08 candidate the day after the 04 election, and with the DNC under control, all the resources go to the 08 WH campaign..remember Dean's folks will take control of the party in the spring....to boot them out immediately wil rerquire a massive purge...which can only happen if dean suffers a huge defeat...

I agree that the resulting power vacuum would naturally suck her into de facto party head. But, would that satisfy her super-human ambition? In charge of a seriously damaged political party doesn't get her to the Presidency. Notwithstanding her liberal past, a reformed Hillary could bring huge sex-related dividends to the Pubbies and Carl Rove understands this. Today, she's quite enamored with George Bush's Iraq coup. Tommorrow she might announce she's a suppy-sider. My guess is that currently she is quite busy researching Margaret Thatcher's life.
