Chechen Rebels Release Dagestan Hostages (Basayev Offensive Begins)
Associated Press ^ | December 16, 2003 | Arsen Mollayev

Chechen rebels - who fought their way into the neighboring Dagestan region, killing nine border guards - released a group of hostages, left a village they had occupied, and slipped away in the dark, authorities said Tuesday.

At least six of the rebels were tracked down and killed by Russian forces, the Interfax news agency reported.

Dagestani police officials initially said most of the dozens of rebels were surrounded in the tiny village of Galatli.

But Dagestani Interior Ministry spokeswoman Anzhela Martirosova later said the gunmen left the village before dawn, leaving behind their 11 hostages - seven from Galatli and four they had seized in another village, Shauri.

A duty officer at the ministry said that before the rebels left Galatli, they told the hostages not to leave the village or seek help until after daybreak.

Dozens of gunmen entered Dagestan from Chechnya early Monday after attacking a border post on the internal frontier. Authorities said they believed the rebels split up into at least three groups Monday after they left Shauri.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Russian forces discovered a group of rebels Tuesday morning near Shauri and killed a half dozen. He said the operation in Dagestan was being led by the deputy commander of the Russian forces fighting in Chechnya.

Said-Salim Peshkhoyev, a deputy to President Vladimir Putin's representative in the portion of southwestern Russia that includes Chechnya, said six to eight rebels were killed in helicopter strikes. It was unclear whether he and Ivanov were referring to the same incidents.

Separately, the ITAR-Tass news agency quoted a Border Guard official as saying seven gunmen - probably among those who entered Dagestan from Chechnya - were killed along the border between Dagestan and the former Soviet republic of Georgia.

The foray into Dagestan prompted fears of a repeat of previous incursions by Chechen rebels into the region during Russia's two wars against Chechen separatists in the past decade.

In a January 1996 raid on the town of Kizlyar, Chechen gunmen seized 3,000 hostages at a hospital. Rebels released most of their captives and headed for Chechnya with about 100 hostages, fending off attacks by Russian troops. At least 78 people were killed in the weeklong fight, which helped the rebels drive Russian forces out of Chechnya and win de facto independence later that year.

Russian troops rolled back into Chechnya in September 1999 after Chechen rebels carried out attacks in villages in western Dagestan and after the Kremlin blamed militants for apartment bombings that killed some 300 people in Russia.

In the latest fighting in Chechnya, five soldiers and two police were killed and 19 troops wounded, an official in the pro-Kremlin administration said on condition of anonymity. Two rebels were also killed in a clash in the past 24 hours, the official said Tuesday.

Also, the official said the body of Nurgi Elmurzayev, head of the local administration in the village of Alkhan-Kala, was found Monday after his abduction several days ago.

Shamil Basayev has given the ex-KGB thug Putin a deadline of February 1st to withdraw from Chechnya or face annihilation. Russian genocide in Chechnya is a crime against all humanity yet the "civilised" world watches silently.

Shamil Basyev -- the greatest fighter on the face of the earth -- has sworn a holy vow to destroy Moscow if the Russian Federation does not yield. When Basayev leaves this world he will take five figures with him. Thus is the power of "Allah's Suitcase".

This brilliant tactical strike into Dagestan confirms Basayev's strategic genius. He stretches Russian defences laterally to mask his main thrust North. How many thousands more illiterate Russian peasant conscripts must die to satisfy Putin's dreams of Empire?

Putin just another failed Socialist thug wearing a cheap suit and bad haircut. Shamil Basayev soaring from the free throw line like a vintage 1970's Dr J -- his thunderous slam dunk will stun the world. When the smoke clears the Russian Federation will be destroyed and all Chechens free at last...

Putin has 46 days to surrender...

The forces of freedom on the move. Europe trembles.

This is a joke, right? What about the slaughter of non-Chechens that took place in Grozni in the early 90's? How many thousands more illiterate Russian peasant conscripts must die to satisfy Putin's dreams of Empire?

Chechnya has its de facti independence till Basayev invaded Dagestan in August of 1999.

While much of the world bites hook, line and sinker on the "story" of Saddam's spider hole, they say in Istanbul that a haggard American has slipped into the city from the Tetovo Republic...

Known only as "the Ghost", this master of fourth generation warfare is said to be making his way across the country toward Tblisi and Baku. His subsequent reappearance in Grozny no doubt to signal the blocking phase of Basayev's avante garde post-modern "Hammer and Anvil" strategy...

Millions to die in the Third World War. Basayev showing himself to be the true master of Maskirovka as he lures Putin into a fatal trap...

The forces of freedom on the move. Europe trembles.

Easy to understand. His comedic genius stands head and shoulders above DEBKA at its best.

I can hear peg leg Martin Luther Basayev shouting "free at last" "free at last".

Welcome back Fusion. Seems like you hit the FR boards and all of the terroist bombings stop. You go in exile for awhile and the bombings begin again. Strange coincidence.

Fusion's claim of the Third World War is accurate. The Islamic extremists have obviously declared war on the West and its not going to stop any time soon. Russia, England, North America, Africa, Indonesia and the list goes on. These Islamic extremist monkeys s have told the west to convert to Islam or else. As the conflict continues the West has not come to grips with the scope of all this. A so called peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis is just a wet dream and even if some kind of two state solution gets worked out it will not last.

Yes Fusion is right there is a Third World War going on which started on Sept. 11 and is slowly gaining in momentum.

Case in point. Just imagine what is going to happen in Iraq when the US decides to pull out next year and they want to!!! Will it become an Islamic state or will Syria's reinstate the old regime with of course a new leader? Got the makings of one very interesting conflict that is going to happen. Remember the 10,000 Shiites executed during Desert Storm by the former regime because of the rebellion? The U.S. should have helped then and maybe made some huge brownie points.

Presently the US is handing out contracts to those countries that helped in the war. Fodder for the extremists is what the end result will be. Right now the former Iraqi intelligence crowd are being hunted down and killed and word has it these former intel. types are not taking this likely and are going on the offensive. The internal Iraqi conflict has already started and the US has not even left yet. The end result of the war on Iraq is the creation of another Islamic extremist state. Iran is tickled pink knowing that the gate keeper /protector of Babylon has been extracted from his dingy hole.

Babylon is up for grabs……

Fusion, I hope you post the "real" story soon.  This implies that you are in agreement with Maddie Albright, that Democrat Rep from Washington state and other assorted kooks.  That's not good company to be in so I hope you have something more to back this statement up.

, they say in Istanbul that a haggard American has slipped into the city from the Tetovo Republic...

Wow!  "The colonel", "The Correspondent", "The Congressman", "The Hawk" and now "The Ghost" must have 100K air miles for each of their many aliases!

There's many people after Basayev, the Scarlet Pimpernel of Chechnya.  Though I have to agree with RussianConservative's analysis on this one.  Should your prediction come true, and your record of late has been pretty poor, the mountains would turn red and I don't think the US would step in.

Keep on posting Fusion.  I read all your posts.  They may not come true but they are enjoyable.

And Wraith, your replies to Fusion are so informative, I simply hope that I find your alias shortly after Fusion's!
