All three tend to go together to the weak in spirit; the "anything goes" crowd.

Putting aside emotions, suicide is ultimately a cop-out.

You are correct. The textbooks call this 'Automatic Negative Thinking'.

No it isn't.

Every thought is negative in nature.

You lie.

It eventually takes it toll.

No it doesn't.

While I agree that free speech is not an absolute and sometimes needs to give way to good taste and etiquette, this is also not a completely private forum. It's open to everyone here, and to ask that everyone believe the same thing about the topic of suicide and treat it the same way is asking too much, IMO.

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.

If this van is rockin' don't bother knockin'.

As a matter of fact I do own the road.

Don't laugh it's paid for.

That's pretty horrible to do that, blow your brains out in front of your grandkids. To me, and I could be wrong, what goes through the head of someone doing that is "Hey, this is the ultimate f*ck you to you and everyone else. Watch this!" Just so selfish and an evil thing to do, though I can sympathize with a depressed person but sympathy aside, an objectively evil act.

I think KangarooJaqui says it all. You are unbelievably insensitive. She was kind enough to use the world 'callous." You ought to be ashamed. (to put it very mildly)

How was I insensitive? I have all the sympathy in the world for people who suffer from depression, my biggest "peeve"(for lack of a better term) is lionizing suicide as noble.

Not to get all religous, but when I had a short, bad spell in my life (nothing too bad, just enough to feel pretty low for a week or too) I was reading the New Testament. Really helped.

I look at it this way, no matter how bad things can get, think of how bad Jesus had it around Passover 33 A.D. He got to take the entire world's sins on his shoulder and was crucified to death.

I tried... but I couldn't embrace the "total abstinance" of AA or NA. That "yee-haw... let's get it on!!!" state of mind has always been with me and total abstinance made me feel even more split.

Heh. I may be flirting with disaster, but I still have the occasional beer. I don't drink like I used to even last year, not even close, but I'll finish a six pack in two or three weeks.

I know this is against the NA creed, but my take on it is, I need to kick the shit out of cocaine, because it sure kicked the shit out of me. Beer got close to being a problem a long time ago, but curiously since I quit drugs my appetite for beer plummeted.

Now..I acknowledge the addict in me.. have even come to love her. For she is the part of me that screams to the heavens when the shit starts to fly... "F**K YOU!! You'll never take me down!!!!"

My addict-self is ugly. I don't love him. I don't even like him.

He's cost me relationships, he's cost me jobs, he's been the focal point of the majority of my problems for a few years. My addict can f*** off and die.

My sponser told me an important thing to do is to name my addict. I named him Don, after someone I know who is hypocritical (condemning me for doing drugs in between tokes), dishonest (stole at least one gun from me), dishonorable in every way, G-d mocking, and really is quite a twisted piece of feces. It remains to see if he's a coward, because I owe him a dance. I train daily. :o)

I got called a bastard basically because I made a post on the other thread saying suicide is a self-centered and awful act. I didn't know apparently the posters' spouse was reading the post or is even a FR member.

I decided to just remove myself from that thread and instead post to this one, because frankly, no matter what you say to apologize there are certain folks that designate themselves the guardians of a thread or the forum that aren't going to accept it (as if they're the ones that should be apologized to, a sign more of their own arrogance than their caring, IMO).

That's ONE sentence where you can't afford a typo.

Feh. I'm so arrogently heterosexual that I can get away with a typo even in THAT sentence and everyone will know I joke. I'm so hetero that most of female freepdom shudders every time I post.

On the other hand, if anyone could sway me to being gay, eddie, you sure could.

Say, you live nearby, right? When's the wife gone?

I know from personal experience exactly what you mean. With me, alcohol. To me it is (was?) like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde...at the moment it's great, then the bottom falls out and you hate it with everything in you. Repeat ad infinitum.

Who are you to judge?

And who are you to judge how he should feel about the topic at hand, or his motives?

Seems to me on this topic, and a few others out there, a few people have designated themselves the Grand Arbiter of All That Is Right And Wrong.

I honestly question their motives, whether it is totally altruistic or some need inside to make themselves the center of attention and be seen as Mr. Helper.

Wait a minute, that's not an argument. He paid for an argument and you're just automatically naysaying every point he makes.

I've lost count of the freepmails and posts I've gotten in the last six months, from FReepers I don't even know saying things like, "I'm related to the man/woman/child in this news article, and you have offended me blah blah blah..."

When you get one of those, try to ping or otherwise inform us if you think of it, okay? We have had the very same experience. As a result, Hellinahandcart is now keeping a ping list so we can attempt to keep track of this phenomenon. Personally, I think a lot of those "I'm related" or "I'm from the town mentioned in the article" posts are by the same person--someone who has multiple names on here. I'm keeping a list of the names used by this person, and so far I've got over 30 names on it. If you check out any of these names, you'll usually find that the name was only used for one thread. This weird disruptor changes names all the time.

His most consistent attribute is that he will claim to somehow be an insider to the news story that the thread is about. For this reason, we have taken to calling him "the obligatory insider".

Just a FEW of the names this spurious poster has used are:

bbaby091, nashvilleguy, hicksmokey, pris, afk, KevinsUncle, SweeTY2004, banglanta, katia, BeBeATLsFINEST, Tony08540, KKRN, Hagitay, gigi6, Furhouse, alwayshavesomethingtosay, sparkl, Stenson63, dasani, bothsidesnow, heathrnd... the list goes on and on. A lot of these names are not banned, but the disruptor seldom goes back and re-uses a name--just starts a new name for a new thread. Weird.

Could it be that he was, in his blunt gruff way, trying to tell her that she is not to blame?

I didn't mean to be blunt and gruff, if it came out that way then I apologize.

But I still stand on that suicide is an of selfishness. The hurt it causes to people left behind is immeasurable, as shown on this thread.
