Clinton visit wraps up S.F. mayor's race

SAN FRANCISCO -- The spirited two-man contest to lead this city wrapped up Monday with one candidate hoping that an appearance by former President Clinton would sway Democratic voters and the other discounting Clinton's impact on the race.

Although only a couple hundred campaign workers were on hand to watch the brief election-eve rally that Clinton headlined on behalf of Supervisor Gavin Newsom, the visit clearly was aimed at the tens of thousands of Democrats in the city who are leaning toward Supervisor Matt Gonzalez, a former Democrat and now a Green Party member.

Former President Clinton speaks Monday night in support of Supervisor Gavin Newsom, right. Newsom, a Democrat, is running for mayor of San Francisco in today's election against fellow Supervisor Matt Gonzalez, a member of the Green Party.

It's a sad day when local Republicans root for a candidate supported by Bill Clinton. But as between the two, Newsom is by far the better choice.

It's tough on SF, but I hope Gonzalez wins -- (a) a slap in the face for Klinton, (b) more strength for Nader in the Presidential.
