Gangs of New York was indeed based on the 1863 Draft Riots, although it "sugarcoated" over events such as the burning of the city's orphanage for "colored" youths by the mob.

You will find Hollywood is not known for it's historical accuracy in all movies...

I believe it is called artistic license.... There was a good movie that came about an integrated high school football team in Virginia... It is my understanding that there was a very impressive Fullback who was key to success of the team of Hispanic descent who was not even mentioned in the movie...

And from what we know of football, there is usually a good passing game to go along with a good running game and vice versa...
