Been to Ramstein Germany. Weather very similar to Montana, Washigton, Idaho, etc. Being a Californian, the winters are a little to virtual for me. LOL!

Lake Havasu is nice to visit, but again, I wouldn't want to live there. It's like Phoenix, it's not a temperature, it's an oven setting.

We actually traveled *all* over the western United States looking for the right spot some years ago.

After experiencing the long and sometimes brutal winters, obscene heat from Washington to Colorado, Idaho, to Arizona etc, we decided that the mountains and high desert of Southern California would be the best bet. Close enough to everything, yet far away enough to retain our sanity.

With me the LA/OC area is a love hate thing. So we decided that being within about 2 hours of the ant hill would be perfect Were just spoiled with the weather, as everything else outside the So. Cal area seems way too extreme to us.

Oh, and I don't know where you got the idea, but I can assure you, I'm not rich. LOL! Maybe someday, but not yet.

Actually, in the suburbs, and cities, the stores and shopping malls would only last a few minutes, or maybe two hours, if that. Everyone would be thinking the same thing as you would. Get food, get water, get gas etc....After that, it would get very scary. In a major event, national financial collapse, major attack, a major terrorist event, all the stores would be stripped clean in a matter of one hour. Forget even trying to get fuel for the car. The lines would be epic.

This thread was more about what happens if racial ugliness spills over, rather than "end of the world"-type disaster scenarios.

In a "Farrakhan was just assassinated by a white Republican" riot scenario, I would rather be on my suburban block, surrounded by armed neighbors that any trouble would have to get past in order to get to me

Yep. Same was true in Brooklyn and the Bronx. College educations and increasing affluence drove the children to the suburbs, leaving only the elderly behind.

White flight was a bigger phenomenom in East Orange and Irvington, though those towns had essentially lost their cachet for younger families by the 60s due to the "new suburbs" being built West and South. My dad still remembers however, that it was once a "step up" to move from Ironbound to Irvington, even though the latter today is just as bad as Bed-Stuy or West Newark.

Let's not forget the 1919 riots in Chicago, which began when a black boy (about 10 years old!) was stoned to death by a gang of poor Irish whites for crossing the "invisible line" on a Lake Michigan beach.

Interesting tidbit: on several occassions, the white rioters who ran with torches and clubs to lay waste to "Bronzeville", they didn't take into account that the blacks in those nabes, many just back from the civil war, had rifles.

One of the main institgators of the riots were an Irish gang know as "Ragen's Colts," one of whose members was a future Mayor of Chicago who would, ironically, count on blacks as his most loyal supporters. Richard Daley would always deny that he took part in the 1919 riots, but others close to him said otherwise...
