Man In Custody After Reports Of Shots Fired
Martin Says Incident 'Probably Not Related'
POSTED: 3:50 p.m. EST December 3, 2003
UPDATED: 4:29 p.m. EST December 3, 2003
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A man is in police custody after shots were reportedly fired in the area of Interstate 270 and Gantz Road in Grove City,
NewsChannel 4 reported.
The incident is being investigated, but Franklin County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Steve Martin said it is "probably not related" to a series of shooting on and around Interstate 270 south of Columbus.
Grove City police were called to the Collier Park Apartments off Gantz Road after reports of shots fired. Police said they found a man in a camouflage sleeping bag. Martin, however, said no gun was found.
Police spokesman Sherry Mercurio said officers are talking to a man. Police later could be seen leading a handcuffed man away from the direction of the woods, but it wasn't immediately clear if he was the man police have been talking with.
Mercurio said it did not appear the man would be arrested.
At least 12 law enforcement officers were at the scene, but none would comment.
Robin Hammond, 43, said she was walking her dog in the woods when she heard a gunshot.
"I heard it and I took off," she said after calling the sheriff's department. "I'm still shaking."

This is a bad week to look for a sniper in Ohio: it's deer season.

No hunting allowed around 270/23/71 area. Its been swallowed up by Columbus. So any shots fired wont be done by a hunter.

This is a bad week to look for a sniper in Ohio: it's deer season Greetings from Fairfax County, Virginia.
I must take exception to your choice of words, here. That fellow you have shooting up cars on your highways may be many things (assailant, murderer, terrorist ...) but he is not a sniper. A sniper is a specialist soldier whose job is to kill specific high-value materiel targets and enemy personnel in and around a battlefield, for the purpose of more quickly and efficiently winning wars. His purpose, ultimately, is to win a war while preserving the lives of his comrades and preventing unnecessary collateral damage to civilians.
Convicted Terrorist John Allen Muhammad is not a sniper.
Accused Terrorist Lee Boyd Malvo is not a sniper.
The person shooting up buildings, cars, and people near I270 is not a sniper.
I hate seeing the presstitutes abuse the word "sniper" by applying it to these assholes.
Rant Ends.

Interesting. Maybe this guy was the sniper or maybe he was a hunter/target shooter that picked a real bad place to go. With all that's been going on in that area, a guy would have to be nuts to go hunting or recreational shooting anywhere near there.

It's been a while since I've driven around Columbus on 270 so I don't know how populated region around the beltway is.

Its not real populated in the area of the shootings but it is still Columbus these days so hunting is not allowed. I understand people would still use the area for range shooting but I dont think these days it would be bright for it to happen with what is going on.

Rant Ends. ahh but a damn good rant it was!
And hopefully several of these unsociable professionals are lurking in the Middle East, patiently waiting for their one shot at Bin Drinkin or Sodom Insane. They are in my prayers and gratitude.

I posted a BN thread earlier based on MSNBC but it turned out to be a false alarm. The authorities grabbed a sleeping deer hunter from a tree stand. Is this something else?

No hunting allowed around 270/23/71 area. Its been swallowed up by Columbus. So any shots fired wont be done by a hunter. It is amazing how long people stay in denial. On an earlier thread I pointed out that any hunting that close to a populated area would have to be using deer slugs. Still, some people expressed the hope it was all accidental, and others chastised me for "speculating." This is no accident. It may well be another Islamist B-team of AQ wannabes.

Most people believe sniper refers to one who fires from hidden ,possibily, preselected positions at unsuspecting targets, military or not. The meaning of words change over time with general usage.

I don't think it's accidental and neither does anyone else I've heard from (including LEO's).
Shame on the people that chastised you for "speculating"...this is FR and it's part of what we do on this forum.
I don't have much experience shooting, but I'm wondering how easy/hard it is to hit a target moving 65 mph???

Not that I have experience shooting at moving cars...that depending on the angle of the shot it could go either way.
A direct perpendicular shot would take some very good timing or "leading"(difficult), however if shooting directly from the back or front of the moving vehicle it would be easier. The more of an angle, the more difficult it would be.
Any one that has thrown a snowball at a moving target would understand.
To: OnAMission
Cars don't go up, down and sideways as doves do, so just get the lead right.

It appears to be...though the local news never said anything about a hunter. They just said he had a pillow and a Bible. (getting ready for the 'right wing religious fanatic' label from the media)

I don't know, but I plan to be doing about 75 mph when I go through that stretch of highway!
