Fathers seize child agency office
20 November 2003
AMSTERDAM A group of angry fathers, who are involved in custody battles over their children, took over an office of the Dutch child protection agency Kinderbescherming on Thursday, the International Day of the Child.
Between 15 and 20 men seized control of the building in Zutphen and effectively imprisoned five staff members, Kinderbescherming spokeswoman Annette van der Hoorn said.
The men, who have been denied visitation to their children, said they had taken the drastic action on World Child Day to highlight the injustice of their situations.
They have not allowed anyone in or out of the offices and hung banners from the window of the offices.
The men have demanded the child protection agency only give advice on how custody arrangements should be made. Present legislation means that parents who breach an imposed custody arrangement forfeit their custodial rights.
The fathers have also demanded a meeting with Justice Minister Piet Hein Donner, the mayor of Zutphen and Kinderbescherming director H. Pasman.
Van der Hoorn said the agency's staff members who were being held in the building did not appear to be in any direct danger. Staff were continuing with their work and the police were not called to the scene.
The UN designated 20 November as the International Day of the Child after the signing of an official convention on the rights of children in 1989.
Yes I see now. I didn't need the apostrophe in the "its". Thanks for squaring away my punctuation. You may be of some use after all.
"And keep the wife barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen where she belongs?"
Did you want an answer to this or are you just baiting?
"LOL...that's rich coming from you. You can't even tell the difference between the possessive case of a pronoun and subject/verb contraction. FYI, they taught that in elementary school.
Yes, yes, you caught my extra apostrophe. But I never claimed to be pedantic. So, how is that rich?
During 1992 presidential debates, president George Bush said that he thought maybe the "deadbeat dad thing" was the problem Americans were most concerned about. To that, candidate Bill Clinton made the famous remark, "It's the economy, stupid."
Yeah, within the next 10 years they are going to find our just how "equal" they really are when the government run, family destroying monster turns on them. Getting fathers out of the way was the hard part. With the family divided, it will be that much easier for the industry to step in and assume the mother's role as well. Like I've said before, keep an eye on the growth of the foster care programs. If the divorce industry was able to use the kids to dictate terms to one parent, the only thing stopping it from controlling both is just a matter of time. The business of government is to grow, especially when it gets the private sector involved.
Apparently you think you are. You've decided that I can be forced to financially support my child after birth, but will not have any say in the child's welfare before birth. If I missed that discussion in Roe vs. Wade please correct me.
That's the way the law currently works. If you don't like it, don't whine to me....change it.
Normally I would say "be careful what you wish for" but what you suggest is going to happen anyway.
Wow, you sure know how to make a girl feel loved.
Did you want an answer to this or are you just baiting?
You decide.
Yes, yes, you caught my extra apostrophe. But I never claimed to be pedantic. So, how is that rich?
"That's" is accepted vernacular for "that is."
I'll save you the trouble and provide you with a link right now:
It may, it may not. I don't really give a $hit either way. Even if they made abortion illegal in the U.S., I'd always have enough money to go to Canada and get one if I wanted one.
Again you are putting blame on the man. You are implying personal responsibility for the action is for the man. In other words it's ok to sue a man for child support but refuse him custody of the child in your view.
Again, if I missed that part in Roe vs. Wade, please show me where it is. Concerning the law, yes, that often is how it is interpreted, unfortunately.
But you asked me what gives me the right to have a say over the child in a woman's body. I responded with "the same thing that says I'm financially accountable." So it's quite simple. Either I'm responsible for the child, or I'm not. Pick one.
And save your heartless drivel about "after the child is born" for Law & Order. I'm interested in fair, consistent legal interpretations - not to mention the well being of every child, not just the convenient ones.
I would have married 10 years ago had I not been determined not to inflict on my own children the grave harm inflicted upon me by the baby-boomer self-absorption of my parents. Since I was too young and immature to be a proper parent at that time, and I knew that, I declined to marry and let the lady I loved fulfill her needs to be a mother - with another man. I'm still torn over it, but on balance I feel I did the right thing. Given a father's guidance in my own childhood, however, I may very well have been ready then to be a good father in my own right.
I can suck up the effects of my own personal tragedies, but I will not sit silently as I watch it happen to other families nationwide!
I can also speak to the devastation growing up without a father does to the female children too. Of course in my particular case, I was better off physically because my father was very abusive to my older siblings, but the rejection part is hard to overcome too. You grow up wondering what's wrong with me, but anyway, God is good and has done a wonderful job of healing :)
Here's what I have a big problem with divorced parents who constantly fight over the custody/ child support issues. They are usually blind and oblivious to what it does to their children. Think about it you have two wounded individuals having to cope with situations that evoke anger, bitterness, hurt and oftentimes they continue to lash out at each other all the while the children are caught up in the middle of their parents mess.
If divorce is absolutely an option I really wish the parents would at least be civil towards each other if for nothing else for the sake of their children's emotional well being. And fathers out there, think twice before you complain about having to pay child support in front of your children. My father was so bitter about having to pay child support and complained constantly TO HIS CHILDREN, it came across to us that his money was more important than his kids.
No...actually, both parties bear some responsibility. How many times have I had male friends (the vast majority of my close friends are male) whine to me that they got some girl pregnant that was "on the pill." I keep telling them to double-bag it, but they never listen. They have to be partly responsible...it takes two, unless you believe that immaculate conception mumbo-jumbo.
In other words it's ok to sue a man for child support but refuse him custody of the child in your view.
I never said that. Cut and paste where I said that and show it to me. Show me where I said exactly that. Otherwise, stop putting words in my mouth.
Not particularly ladylike, but this profound comment does fit nicely with your pedantic description.
"You decide."
Hmm... before I answer that, let me ax you a question.
Do you think there is anything wrong with being barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen? If so, what?
Also, let me offer up a mea culpa for any current and future grammatical transgressions. "Cuz I ain't gunna be putting on no airs that I be learned."
I'll be glad to. Of course, you'll claim (a la Billy Clinton) that the exact words were not used. But here we are, in response to:
As a parent, I have every right to ensure the life and safety of my child.
You replied: Only after it has been born.
So the woman can permanently deny the father custody by killing the child (excuse me, by exercising her "choice"), but you expect the man to fulfill his financial obligations if it's convenient for the woman.
