I started shooting at about 6 years old; my kids will start learning as soon as they can hold firearm w/o me fearing they will drop it.

Please: do NOT forget 'manual training' - physical self defense doesn't require a carry permit, is always 'carried', is a proven lifesaver in more instances than armed confrontations, and can be freely taught at home without expensive courses (going to a storefront-school to 'prance around in their pyjamas' costs big-bucks).
There's no reason that, close-in, a kid with training cannot disable an adult attacker enough to get away to safety.
