IRAQI CHILD SHOT WHILE POINTING AN AK-47 AT U.S. FORCES
AR RAMADI, Iraq Elements of the 1st Infantry Division conducted a mission in Ar Ramadi today. While on patrol, the soldiers witnessed two men with weapons running into a nearby residence. The soldiers followed the men in order to apprehend them for questioning.
Upon approaching the house, a seven-year-old child came out with an AK-47 rifle pointed at the soldiers. A soldier responded in self-defense and shot the child in the foot. The child was rushed to the nearest army medical facility for treatment and further evacuated by air to Baghdad.
This incident is currently under investigation.

You're doing the right thing, Sir.
I started shooting at about 6 years old; my kids will start learning as soon as they can hold firearm w/o me fearing they will drop it.
Your children (and mine) will never be at the mercy of a bigger, stronger adult.

Larry Niven's Laws:
First Law: Never throw s**t at an armed man.
Second Law: Never stand next to someone who is throwing s**t at an armed man.
It works for me! :)

Your children (and mine) will never be at the mercy of a bigger, stronger adult. Provided, of course, that they are armed at the particular time.
Please: do NOT forget 'manual training' - physical self defense doesn't require a carry permit, is always 'carried', is a proven lifesaver in more instances than armed confrontations, and can be freely taught at home without expensive courses (going to a storefront-school to 'prance around in their pyjamas' costs big-bucks).
There's no reason that, close-in, a kid with training cannot disable an adult attacker enough to get away to safety.

Thanks for the kind words.
I am more training them to protect themselves from a tyrannical government.
Solitas makes a good point too.

Very valid point.
Every parent should teach their children the value of a well-placed kick to the.... ummmmm.... family jewels can deflect an attack and that fingernails (and keys) do considerable damage to eyeballs.

I was taught at an early age what to do that would cause the most damage, to have the ability to use what was at-hand to help gain an advantage, when to do it and when not to do it, and, most importantly, to have a healthy regard, respect, and restraint-of-use for the abilities I had that others did not (i.e. schoolmates).
I am proud to say I have never gotten into a fight with anyone in all my years and have never maliciously, intentionally, hurt anyone. And I am thankful I've never had the need (so far, touch wood) to have had to physically defend myself.
I did get several opportunities, some time ago, to go all-out with/on a padded instructor who said he was impressed by my 'home schooled' abilities. He quite agreed that to be the agressor was secondary to being able to defend/disable-as-necessary/retreat.
