Afterwards, the committee's acoustics findings were cast in doubt by a special panel of the National Academy of Sciences, which asserted that the sounds contained on the police dictabelt were simply static. In 2001, the NAS panel was in turn challenged by a study conducted by government scientist D.B. Thomas and published in the British forensics journal Science and Justice, which found that there was indeed a fourth shot from the grassy knoll.

And Thomas in turn was refuted. By me (O'Dell acoustics study), by Court TV and by an upcoming paper published by the prior members of that National Academy panel.

I haven't kept up with any of the theories about JFK's assassination, except in a cursory way, so I'm not qualified to comment on them. I didn't even watch the shows about it on this 40th anniversary...except for part of the FRONTLINE piece, and a bit of the Posner interview. But, my mother and I were glued to the television for every piece of info that was aired about it at the time it happened.
Mother watched more of the recent shows about it than I. Neither of us felt Mr. Posner's opinion was correct.
I must tell you that I found this article you posted to be closest to what our instincts told us, and the opinions we formed at the time JFK was killed. We never doubted that Oswald had killed the president, but we believed then, and now, that he was part of a conspiracy.
Because of tidbits of info heard and seen during that period of time, I believed Oswald when he said he was a "patsy". I remember a spokesman for Dallas LE saying late the night before they were to move Oswald the next morning, that Oswald was ready to cooperate with the authorities. Jack Ruby had had an opportunity to shoot Oswald earlier, and when asked later by one of the LE officers why he did not, he said he was afraid that he would hit one of them. It was more chaotic and crowded when Oswald was being moved from the jail than earlier. Ruby didn't seem concerned that he would accidentally shoot LE personnel then. His explanation for why he killed Oswald didn't ring true for many reasons that I won't go into here. The fact that Oswald was killed before having the opportunity to tell LE what he knew is a big indication to me that he was the patsy he said he was.
Like I said, this isn't something I've studied. My opinion about it won't matter much to anyone but me. I doubt the mystery will ever be solved to everyone's satisfaction, but from what I observed at the time, my gut tells me that this is closer to the truth of the matter than anything I've heard.

Court TV last week carried the story of a study they funded by a forensic acoustics company in Boston which investigated the original tape (used by the Assassination Committee) and found that the acoustic patterns of the four "gunshots" did not match each other or the patterns of gunshots actually recorded for the study in Dealy Plaza.

Correct.

Moreover they recovered the words "hold them secure" from the tape and matched them with the same phrase recorded on tapes from police headquarters more than a minute after the assassination shots

They didn't recover the words, they have always been there.

- their conclusion was that the tape was made after JFK was shot..

The alleged shot sounds were recorded at least 61 seconds after the shooting. Court TV didn't establish that timeline, I did.

and the "gunshots" were really only noise...

More precisely, matches to noise were just as good as to the supposed shots.

Well it seems it is your work against his.

It seems accoustics is more art than science.

His case is not just based on the sound evidence from Dealey Plaza, which might or might not stand the test of time, but on voluminous research compiled by his committee staff on Oswald, Ruby, and alleged Mafia conspirators Marcello and Trafficante. "My guess is that the Warren Commission will carry the day -- because it's too hard for people to grasp the other stuff. The Assassination Committee's work has been reduced to the acoustics."

I don't know the answer and I am somewhat neutral on the subject.

This I do know for a fact. Kennedy and the govt he inherited were staffed with crooks, murderers and assassins. The assassinations and attempted assassinations that occurred around the world may have had karmic consequences on JFK.

What CourtTV show were you watching? This program does lead toward some conclusions -- the producer does lean toward an opinion about whether Oswald worked alone and whether there was a shot fired from the Grassy Knoll (no and yes respectively) -- but in the end, we're left with conflicting facts and allowed to make up our own minds.

I had heard about this photo and believed it to be real but had not looked at it closely until now. I wonder why Oswald's T-shirt appears to be whiter than anything else in the photo and lacks the haze that seems to affect the rest of the photo.

Oswald took the bus to the Trinity river to shoot.

Marina stated that he used to practice working the bolt and some of the cases has more than one chambering mark on them.

I don't know of any police or military snipers who use iron sights. The average police shot is something like 110 yards at most. The Carcano was the least expensive rifle in the advertisement that had a scope and Oswald's first target wasn't a person riding in a car moving away from him.

Having just checked it out again myself, I agree. Not only his shirt but Oswald's hair and his whole body are brighter than anything else in the picture...even though he is farthest away from the camera. As you say Oswald lacks the haze of the rest of the people in that picture.

All cameras have a "fingerprint" in the way the lens are scratched and ground. These are microscopic irregularities that show up in each negative. That's how they were able to check Oswald's camera to see that Marina really did take the pictures of her huband holding the Carcano.

I think it's only fair to subject the camera that made this picture to the same scrutiny.

I think it was the Mafia (motive - betrayal by RFK's DoJ investigation of the Cosa N, after they had helped try to kill Castro). The shooting of Oswald by Ruby, who was an underworld figure, is just too neat.

Agreed, that would be the fair way to know....if it can be found and positively identified....some 40 yrs later. Perhaps analysis of the photo itself would reveal some of those differences. I kind of doubt that any strategic link can be proven by this picture.
I wouldn't want to be accused of knowing everyone who has been in a group picture taken with me in it.

Destro, post #1
Offical records of that time as cited in Posner's "Case Closed" indicate that Ferrie was not even in the C.A.P. at the time Oswald served. So how to explain the official record with this photo?

Three ways I can think of:
1. the official record is wrong
2. the photo is wrong
3. the gathering was social, a mixture of past and present C.A.P members

Wonder if Blakey and Bobby Baker knew each other, were friends, since both worked on Capitol Hill? Bah, Oswald didn't kill Kennedy. Until the govt is forthright and honest and release all the documents, or someone with actual proof of who the killers are, the public is never going to know what really went down in Dallas in November '63.
