Anyone know of any elected officials who were/are members of communist / anarchist terror groups such as the SDS, Yippies, Weather Underground, Black Panthers, SLA, ELF, etc.? The only one I know of is Tom Hayden; I'm sure there must be more.

Does Hillary count?

Yes. She is currently a US Representative though I can't recall her name. She is the only house member to vote against one of the war resolutions. I believe she is either from CA. or somewhere in the south. She was at one time associated with the CPUSA and they gave her some award fairly recently. Sorry I can't dredge any more from the memory banks. You might troll the index in Radical Son and you will find several names I'm certain.

There are several democrats who are actually members of Democrat Socialists and proud of it. If that isn't a commie group, nothing is. (Hillary is a marxist, but that is a secret.)

Senator Robert C. Byrd (D., W.Va.) was a Kleagle (Recruitment Officer) for the Ku Klux Klan, which aligned with Hitler's German National Socialism against the U.S.A. during WWII.
The official biography on his Senate website doesn't mention every single job he ever had on his resume, just all of his other jobs:
http://byrd.senate.gov/byrd_bio/byrd_story/byrd_story.html Byrd's words:
"The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth in West Virginia... It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state in the Union. Will you please inform me as to the possibility of rebuilding the Klan realm of W. Va?" Byrd' letter to the Klan's Imperial Wizard, 1946.
Byrd on "race mongrels." "[I will] never submit to fight beneath that banner [the American flag] with a Negro by my side. Rather would I die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds." 1947 letter by Robert Byrd.
Seventeen years later, Senator Byrd also filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which he then voted against along with 20 other Senate Democrats.

http://www.newsmax.com/showinside.shtml?a=2002/12/29/03136 If the Democrats really want to cleanse the Senate of racists, why not start with West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd, asks the Wall Street Journal.
According to an Opinion Journal editorial, "grumpy Democrats" are claiming that the entire GOP needs to make amends for its allegedly racist past. "Well, fine," wrote the Journal, "if it's a wholesale purge Democrats want, we assume they'll be happy to start with their own ranks and oust the former Ku Klux Klan Kleagle, Robert Byrd of West Virginia."
This "high moral and political tone" was set by the Democrats' supreme leader, Bill Clinton, when he said: "I think there is something hypocritical about the way Republicans are jumping all over [Trent Lott]. He just embarrassed them by saying in Washington what they do on the back roads every day." Adding her own contribution to Clintonian hypocrisy, his wife Hillary charged that what Lott did "was state publicly what many of them have stated privately over many years in the back roads and back streets of the South."
Observing that the GOP hasn't a single ex-Klansman in its ranks, especially not one who, like Byrd, has been the Senate's president pro tem, putting him third in line for the presidency after the vice president and speaker of the House, "Surely" the journal wrote, "this must shock the conscience of the Clintons."
Byrd quit the Klan in the 1940s and has since renounced the organization, but his Klan background is worth a second look because the Democrats have chosen to overlook it even in the face of remarks that, had they been made by a Republican, would brought his career to a sudden and painful end.
The Journal recalled that just last year Byrd told Fox News that "there are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time, if you want to use that word. But we all - we all - we just need to work together to make our country a better country and I - I'd just as soon quit talking about it so much."
Although Byrd quickly apologized, he wasn't denounced by Democrats, much less by the Clintons. Nor did the press corps bother to "wallow in other Byrd racial lowlights, such as the 14 hours and 13 minutes he spent in an unsuccessful filibuster during the debate over the 1964 civil rights act, which he voted against along with 20 other Senate Democrats."
Nor, wrote the Journal, did the political press recall his votes against both Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, votes that made him the only senator to have opposed the only two black Supreme Court nominees in U.S. history.
Democrats and their media allies also ignored what the New York Times reported in 1971 concerning a letter Byrd wrote in 1946 to the Klan's Imperial Wizard after he had quit the Klan. After identifying himself as a former Klan Kleagle, he recommended a person to serve as state Klan coordinator.
"The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia," he wrote. "It is necessary that the order be promoted immediately and in every state in the Union. Will you please inform me as to the possibilities of rebuilding the Klan realm of W. Va.?"
In a 1947 letter, after his election to the West Virginia State Senate, he wrote that he would "never submit to fight beneath that banner [the American flag[ with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."
Democrats, the Journal notes, knew all about his disgusting racist past when they elected him their majority whip in 1971 over Ted Kennedy and made him majority leader in 1977, when he defeated Hubert Humphrey. He led his party in the Senate until 1989. Even now, as senior Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, he is celebrated by his fellow Democrats as the "conscience of the Senate."
Noting that Republicans have shown a willingness to punish any perceived nostalgia in their own ranks for the bad old days of segregation when they ousted Trent Lott from his leadership post, the Journal concluded that "Democrats should be applauding this act of hygiene, especially given their own tolerance for leaders who have prospered by playing the race card."
Amen.

I was at Hofstra around that time and hung around with that same left wing crowd, but I don't remember him.

This is outside the USA, but the German foreign affairs minister Joseph "Joschka" Fischer was a member of the Baader-Meinhof gang in the 1970s. German justice minister Otto Schily was their lawyer, and obviously a sympathiser at the very least. Baader-Meinhof and the similar Red Army Fraktion kidnapped and killed people and were funded and largely run by East German and Soviet intelligence agencies.

Some info on Pelosi & link to Progressive Caucus member list.
Bump to xm177e2 - found your post from a search. Any add'l info to add?
"In politics, as in life, you are defined by the company you keep. PELOSI has long been a leader of the House Progressive Caucus and a member of its executive committee. The Progressive Caucus espouses the principles of Socialism and, in fact, has reportedly signed onto the agenda of Socialist International. According to nationally syndicated columnist Balint Vazsonyi, the caucus was formed some years ago when 58 members of the House of Representatives formed a subdivision of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA/USA), the U.S. arm of Socialist International. WorldNetDaily reports that until just a few years ago the caucus website was hosted by DSA/USA. One of Pelosis closest allies in the House of Representatives is Vermont Independent Bernie Sanders, a fellow leader of the and the only member of Congress openly professing to be a socialist." (

He went from Hofstra to University of Iowa Law School and then worked in Democrat politics in Minnesota. Ran for mayor of St. Paul, converted to Republican, ran for governor and lost to Jessie Ventura. Ran for the US Senate and beat the ghost of Paul Welstone. He's a huge improvement.
