This is a new era of protest. It's pretty much a given that "draft board" members will find their pictures, names, addresses, phone numbers, places of employment, and perhaps other information posted on the web, on foreign hosted sites if neccesary.

Conscription is as militarily obsolescent as "human wave" attacks. It's only value is to those who want to skimp on pay/training/equipment/morale and fight a bunch of half-ast actions, to those who wish to use the military for social engineering, and to those who wish to use it to stir up anti-military resentment.

I doubt if basic humanity was all that different back then. The difference might be that now the media has, for partisan reasons, propagandized our efforts and has spun and hidden the severity of the threats to our nation. The American people knew the direct threat of Pearl Harbor.

If the media and dems had not programmed the public...if our national realization had been allowed to remain the same as it was September 12, 2001, attitudes might be more like they were in 1942. The public would know how real this modern threat is and would know it will take more than a few days and a sound bite to eliminate the danger.

Imagine if every day, before All My Children and Dan Rather and Everybody Loves Raymond, all channels showed a 10 second clip of American bodies falling from the sky and a trailer at the bottom, reading, "REMEMBER". Imagine if every newspaper had a small picture of the WTC burning at the upper left-hand corner. Imagine if our country and our president wasn't being despised and sabotaged from within at every opportunity. Kids might be pulling up their pants and standing in line out in front of the recruiting offices.

Barry Goldwater wanted to get rid of it and Ronald Reagan strongly opposed implementing it. Conscription is a left-statist concept.

Although the plain language of the 13th Amendment bans involuntary servitude and the draft is involuntary servitude, the intent of the amendment was clearly to abolish chattel slavery as it had existed in the South and the border states before 1865. Both the Union and Confederate governments conducted drafts. The very Congressmen who authorized the military draft also approved the 13th Amendment. The clear intent of the legislators was the elimination of chattel slavery and nothign else. This intent is evident from studying the debates at the time the amendment was discussed in Congress and ratified by the states.

However, a strict construction of the Constitution does prohibit the Federal government from conducting a military draft, as this power is not delineated in the scope of powers found in Article I, Section 8, and the Ninth and Tenth Amendments prohibit the Feds from going beyond the powers enumerated in the document. All other powers were to be retained by the states and the people.

However, the states are not prohibited from conducting a draft in the operation of the militia. Common law precedents permit the states (though not the Federal government) to levy men for the defense of the state.

You missed a strange, confusing, ugly time. btw...if you were not subject to the draft (born 57-59) you are ineligible to serve on your local board.

I completely believe there will not be a college deferment if a new draft should ever be instituted... nation learned the hard way on that one last time around.

I don't think they are about to start drafting, but if they do they won't be able to do that kind of nonsense... it would be political suicide to play that kind of game.

The only way I see a draft becoming instituted is if some very large and organized attack happens... politically drafting to force people to police post war Iraq won't fly... it won't fly for neccessary, but more philosophical battles that will likely be launched in the future. IE going into Iran, or Syria etc agressively (should that happen).

If N. Korea invades the south, or nukes Japan, or Iran fires a nuke or something... or some biological attack, then yes I can see the draft being implimented. However the way things stand right now, I just don't see it happening.

Social Security and Medicare cost taxpayers nearly a trillion dollars last year. That's about a third of our budget. If that's not sucking off the tit of the tax-payers, I don't know what is.

I have no doubt they are, Step father was career military until Bubba destroyed it, he got out after 13 years, Uncle is 20+ years retired, and I lived several years of my life in Jacksonville, NC.. a town who only exists in order to support Camp Legiune... I am not claiming older soldiers still fight, but by and large the force is younger.

Agreed. There's simply no reason or need for a draft today. If it happens, it'll be as a result of some event so horrendous that men will be lined up outside recruiting offices across the country begging to enlist anyway, and to challenge the draft will make you as universally hated as you would have been raising hell about it in 1943.

We all pay for SS/Medicare, based on our income.

Some programs, such as SSI and Medicaid, are part of a safety net for the poor or those who could not or did not work or did not earn enough or did not work in industries/jobs covered by some sort of reporting of income.

Some SS goes to children for various reasons, many of them medical. The disabled who formerly worked can get SS after a lengthy investigation of their claims. Often, these folks cannot get any conventional health insurance that is affordable, especially if you are totally disabled.

Civil Service employees are covered under a much better retirement and health insurance policy.

SS is taxed as income. Medicare carries a premium, as well.
It is hardly a free lunch and is inadequate, by itself, to cover living or medical costs, if you are unfortunate to have some condition that requires treatment over time.

Anyone who paid in and dies prior to collecting or who doesn't have a spouse entitled to a portion of their pre-paid benefit is out of the system, thereby saving the system that payout.

When you reach 67, or whatever the retirement age for your age group is, I hope you put your money where your mouth is and refuse your Medicare benefits for which you paid while employed. You can simply return the SS check that will be issued when you are 70 or you can donate it to your favorite charity...if you donate to charity.

I find such rantings to be ignorant, uniformed and full of rage. Perhaps you would prefer streets full of beggars and old age that is penalized by total indigence?
