Another remarkable solar flare has erupted from giant sunspot 486--an X8-class blast at 1725 UT on Nov. 2nd. Because the sunspot is nearing the sun's western limb, this explosion was not aimed squarely at Earth. Even so, a coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading our way. Auroras could appear on Nov. 3rd or 4th when the fast-moving cloud delivers a glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field. Visit spaceweather.com for more information and images.

COnsidering the high yesterday was a X-8 , this one looks to be a 9 or 10, might even be challenging the 11 from last week. WOW!

Would that be a Y-class event? I think that's what they're calling them.

I sure hope these massive sunspot groups calm down before they come about again in a week or so.

I am wondering how to take photos of the aurora... I have a Sony-F707 that I can take photos with. I know it can be done, I just don't know what settings to use.

Right, but instead of looking like a random event during the quiet sun part of the solar cycle, they seem to be continuing and maybe getting stronger. Will these events continue and start doing real damage? The sun probably won't just explode altogether, but it could get unfriendly to life on earth. That's Art Bell stuff, but he might be right one of these times.

Yep - she came out of good ole 486. GOES has it rated as X-18+, Space weather as X-14 or X-11.
Some saying this may be the biggest one ever recorded by the time all the data is collected.

The CCD should be able to pick up anything that you can see. I believe you have a setting for dark condition shooting on the unit. Look for a setting indicated by a crescent moon.
BTW, thanks for heads up re CPAC the other day. Doesn't fit into my schedule this time as far as I can tell but maybe at a later one. They sound quite good. Good luck!

Here you go:
I put it on twilight on the tripod and 'burst 3'. Worked like a charm.

If you are going to show it off... Go to the page instead...
That is here... When they are bigger, the shots are incredible! I have them in poster size... Someone even suggested that I put them on shirts.
