I've always wondered the same thing. When he was young one of my sons was convinced that the Air Force had alien space craft and bodies in Hanger 51 or whatever number it was. This was about the same time Jimmy Carter told the world about our stealth fighter.

I've often wondered if Hinckley had successfully killed Reagan, would there now be a gigantic cottage industry of books and movies about the "Plot to kill Reagan conspiracy" linking Hinckley to the KGB, Cuban agents, AFL-CIO, etc. etc.

My conclusion is "yes" especially if somehow Hinckley had killed Reagan and then Hinckley had been shot by the Secret Service immediately after he shot Reagan or something.
