Teen says he held tire iron but didn't swing it in Glendale slaying
Associated Press
LOS ANGELES - A teenager testified that he held a tire iron but denied using it to strike a 17-year-old student who was killed during a gang fight near a Glendale high school three years ago.
Suspected gang member Rafael Gevorgyan told a Superior Court jury he used the tire iron to scare away a crowd but "never swung at anybody."
The 18-year-old said he had been injured during the May 5, 2000, fight and never saw his co-defendant, 21-year-old Karen Terteryan, holding a knife prosecutors say was used to stab high school senior Raul Aguirre.
Prosecutors allege Terteryan stabbed Aguirre, Gevorgyan hit him in the head with the tire iron and another teen, Anait Msryan, drove them all away.
Msryan pleaded guilty before the trial and testified for the prosecution.
Both defendants are charged with Aguirre's murder and the attempted murder of another teen, Jimmy Orozco, who was injured in the fight. If convicted, they face up to life in prison.
Gevorgyan testified Thursday that the defendants, both Armenian-Americans, (snip)

Hisperia is on the west side of I-15. You go through Hisperia to get to the east side of Big Bear. The south side of Big Bear was burned about five or six years ago. Hopefully, for the south side all of that brush has not grown back.
You had another question about Carlsbad. I have a friend who lives in Rancho Santa Fe -- about 15 miles southeast of Carlsbad. He told me everything was fine there as of yesterday.

Does anyone know how close the fires are to the town of Carlsbad (just north of San Diego)? I haven't heard of fires in that area, but they might have had smoke the last few days. Carlsbad is about 3-5 miles down the coast from Oceanside. (probably about the same distance from Encinitas to Solana Beach)

My mom just called and told me that my aunt who lives in Hesperia phoned her and said that they were evacuating Hesperia and parts of Apple Valley. The evacuations are Mandatory and as the fire comes up over the pass and down the other side of the summit fire officials are saying there is no way they can stop it. Amazing.

That is really bad news -- I thought they had Crestline handled. What is going on with all of these areas -- almost like someone is starting fires up again. Strange unless there has been a windshift.

VERY worried the Paradise fire will merge with the other fire. (missed the name) Probably the Cedar fire, which is the big fire in San Diego county. I hope they don't merge.

Paradise fire can merge with the Dulzura fire (northeast of Tijuana), the Cedar fire (San Diego) or the Mountain fire (south of Hemet). The Camp Pendleton fire could go east, but that's doubtful *gulp* I hope.

I15 divides Hesperia. Most of it is on the East Side though. My aunt is evacuating Hesperia right now. This is a large town just on the North side of the Cajon Summit. Apple Valley is being evacuated to. Evacuations are mandatory!

Wednesday Updates after 8:43 am (PDT)
http://homepage.mac.com/joeurbz/iblog/index.html Scanner: "It is going to be a busy day, especially when it gets warmer."
Air Support has major issues: Smoke is ugly. Helis are having problems.
New website: San Bernardino Fire Information
- Concerns from readers: TV reporters keep giving an impression that the threat to Lake Arrowhead and Crestline has passed. For those listening to the scanners, this is far from the truth. We know that reporters are not allowed past the 5000ft level (somewhat due to Chuck Henry decision to push his report), so there is a not a lot of NEW information from them. They are only dramatically repeating the same stuff repeatedly. (Message boards are filled with more questions then facts, just many offering information filled with inaccuracies and tempers.) If you have any CONFIRMED reports, please share them.
- The fire is in Hesperia down by the tracks; it has "cranked like a freight train" over Crestline and is travelling FAST with severe visibility. It is not stopping. Other flanks of the fire (such as the threat of Grandview are also advancing) are not slowing down either.
