I live 3 miles south of Mount Soledad in PB, and I drove my kids up just before sunset. (This is a famous mountain atop La Jolla near the coast, with a big cross on top that the ACLU hates.)

Hundreds of sight-seers were there, taking pictures and gawking.

The air was pure and clean, no ash at all, a seabreeze was coming in. The sun in the west was blood red while still high above the horizon.

To the east you could see almost all of SD County shrouded in thick gray smoke. As it got dark, fires east along 52 near Mission Gorge were visible, and more fires up toward Escondido. Most of the fires were invisible in all the smoke.

Keeping you in my prayers for your safety tonight. I feel pretty good about where I live (middle of the city). I know your area and you do have open areas. I hope your home is in the middle of the development rather than on the outside perimeter. It seems that the homes that are burning are the ones on the edge of the tract.

Are the fires just located in the southern part of the state?

I had to go off to work for a couple of hours. The entire street my business is on was basically closed down. I had a commitment I had to fulfill.

I'm fairly high up, near the Presidio, and I can't see for sh!t. House reeks with the smell of smoke.
