I just verified with my husband, it is the 76. The problem was basic "NIMBY"ism, nobody wanted another freeway running through their backyards, so it was being held up. It may be finished now, but as of last year the huge chunk was still left to be done.
Nice drive, though, I used to take is sometimes when I wanted to avoid the 5 to 805 to 15 crawl.

Oh, you're right! The 76 is the Ortega Highway between I-5 and Elsinore. I got them mixed up.

They are wonderful little dogs. And he will be the first thing taken from the house if we have to evacuate. ;-)

I have bags packed ready to get my family out... Doing so before full sundown might be a real wise precaution.
If not, kindly give us a post at least once an hour at least until things in your neighborhood look a little more stable.

Thank you for the prayers; my mom and I are getting nervous - but the fires don't seem to be coming our way at the moment. We're packing our stuff tonight so we can be ready to go at a moment's notice.

I think 76 is the highway from Oceanside to Escondido. The one that goes through Bonsall. The Ortega Highway was the 74. :-) The freeways get baffling at times.

Sorry I can not help you. I do not know the area or the names. I have been afraid I might mess up if I become active in these threads so I have just been lurking since yesterday. I jumped in with your question because I was pretty sure I would not mess up about Malibu ;)

I don't know what the coverage is in California, but in NY on FOX it's been thus:
1. Bombing of Iraqi hotel 2. Bombing of Iraqi hotel 3. Lee Malvo 4. Bombing of Iraqi hotel 5. Democrats running for president 6. Bombing of Iraqi hotel 7. Weather 8. Food recipes 9. Bombing of Iraqi hotel 10. CA fire (2 seconds) 11. Yankees 12. Marlins 13. Bombing of Iraqi hotel 14. Ramadama ding dong celebrations in the Middle East 15. Bombing of Iraqi hotel 16. CA fire (2 seconds) 17. Middle East peast talks 18. Bombing of Iraqi hotel 19. Concerns about the Middle East 20. Bombing of Iraqi hotel 21. Concerns about the Middle East 22. Laci Peterson (even while Governor Gray Davis speaking, but Fox finally managed to pull the t.v. away from Peterson re-runs about 7 minutes into Gray's speech....I know this because I went between CNN and FOX and managed to enjoy watching everything Davis said because I was on CNN when he came on......then flipped to see FOX was still on Laci's husband reruns). 23. Cut away from Davis, as soon as he finished speaking, to go back to Peterson rerun or Iraqi hotel bombing, I believe. I don't know for sure because when they did that, I flipped back to (ack) CNN. So, I'm pretty sure that no one on the East Coast really realizes that almost all of Southern California is burning up because we've spent the whole day on FOX, CNN, and MSNBC WATCHING Iraq.

Oh, hell! I can never keep track of those darn things! You're right again!
76 is one I took by mistake once after dark, thinking it was the Ortgega. Thought I was going to die alone and friendless on a gravel road in the middle of nowhere.
Good thing I moved, I'd be lost right now if I had to remember freeway numbers. Thanks for keeping me straight!

uuuuuuuu. I remember what those look like. And the smell of smoke. And the ash all over the ground.....how awful for all the people who can do nothing to help themselves save their belongings, their homes......

What area are you located in?
To: Brad's Gramma
Fire is near Otay Lakes area. That's all I know about it. Bonita Vista High School is evacuation center.

Are you wearing your tinfoil hat? I agree with your point that poor land management has played a huge factor in the enormity of this fire.
RE: the ELF wackos. I agree they don't engage the brain prior to their acts of terrorism. Example: the Hummer dealership they torched caused more pollution than an entire lifetime of vehicle use.

Is this the beginning of Ramadan? I have a nephew and his family near Carmel Mountain off Hwy 15. Fires within a mile of his home. Road closed. Prayers please.

The wackos burning the UTC complex makes them a bit suspect.
