Good point. As a Yankee fan, I was convinced that Boston was going to win that game in extra innings. There are just too many guys in that lineup who can go deep, while the Yankees have really been scratching for most of their runs over the last few games (actually, going back to Game 3 after the on-field incidents -- many of the Yankee hitters had really looked awful since then).

It's funny, but as a Yankee fan, i had no doubt they would lose. Yankee fans have seen this story over and over again. While the ending is never certain, odds are overwhelmingly in favor of the Yankees winning in extra innings in situations like this.

I was on the phone with friends on and off - once it was tied, the general consensus was that the Yanks will jack one in extra innings. That's what happened I can't tell you how many times, in my 30 years or so of being a Yankee fan, I have seen this story play out. More often than not, the Yankees win in this situaton.

There's something sick, about supposed Conservatives to be yowling about the free market/business!

Major League Baseball has a congressionally granted antitrust exemption. It need not adhere to the same regulatory strictures as ordinary businesses. Baseball ownership has thus formed a cartel that would be illegal in industries with less popular-political clout.

Anyone is free to start their own competing baseball league. However, they would have to compete against MLB’s congressionally approved cartel. So we are not talking about a free and open market here.

In a competitive, open market, a league with 30 teams could probably support six or seven teams in the greater New York area and five or six in the Los Angeles area. Two in each metro region is not competitive.

Finally, compare how MLB has done against the NFL since the NFL instituted revenue sharing about 30 years ago. Baseball was the most popular sport in the U.S. then, but now it’s third. Football was second, now it’s first. Hate to say it, but revenue sharing has worked well for the NFL.

Y'all are not going to believe this, but when I saw the Yankees were trailing 4-1 in the 6th (I think) , I took some Valium and put on an audiobook on my laptop. I didn't intend to fall asleep -- I was going to refresh the game thread every fifteen minutes or so. But I did fall asleep, and didn't wake up until about 1:45 am. I refreshed the game thread, fully expecting to see a Yankee loss.

Then I saw the thread title, and at first I thought it said the Red Sox had won 6-5. I blinked several times, and realized what happened.

I feel terrible for missing this drama, and terrible for the Sox fans that had to lose THIS WAY. But I'm glad the team I was rooting for won -- and I have at least four games to make up for falling asleep in this one.

I'm just waiting for the full SportsCenter rundown, because all I have seen that I missed are the Giambi and Boone home runs.

I'm still in shock. When I took the Valium, the Yankees message board had dozens of messages (top-level posts, mind you) saying "it's over, wait until next year, etc." I'm going to spend some time reading that board to see the drama unfolding. I'll also read the rest of the game thread to see how it unfolded.

I must say that I'm sorry any team had to lose, but I'm glad Clemens didn't get a loss and I'm glad Pedro didn't get a win.

Maybe falling asleep was for the best. I would probably have had serious stomach ulcers watching the later innings.

After all the unpleasantness between the two teams, I want to say that I now hope the Sox win it all someday soon, but don't have to go through the Yankees to do it. I hope that the year Boston wins it, the Yankees don't make the playoffs or lose to another team in the ALDS first.

Haha! Baseball is my lifelong passion, what can I say. This season has been very personal for me - I hate the Cubs (I hate Chicago, always have), loathe the Red Sox and their 'beantown', and have adored my beloved Yankees since age 1975 or so.

I've got all that I wanted - The Chubbies and the BoTox sent home packing, the Cubbies by clearly screwing up, and the Sox by just being overwhelmed deep in the heart of their enemy territory. Crushing the Sox post-season dreams at the hands of the Yankees is a sweet victory, indeed!

On to the World Series - the Marlins are no slouches, people have been to quick to call it in 4 games. I think the Yanks will win, but the games will be good. For me, the ALCS was the main series of this postseason for me!

You don't understand ... MORE teams are the PROBLEM , not the " answer. Also, it doesn't matter on wit, if a state/area could support 5 or 6 teams ( which they could not!);expansion has made baseball worse. I grew up in N.Y.C., at a time when it had THREE major baseball teams. Most of the time, the Giant fans were hating the Dodgers and vice versa. The Yankees were loathed, when either of the former teams played them in the World series. That was a time, long past now, when baseball was America's number one sport. That is, unfortunately no longer the case and more about that,anon. NO area/state, could now support 5 or six teams and the game would be so damned watered down, as to make it worthless! And yes, I hate the changes made to the game, because of expantion; with a passion!

Football and basketball were NEVER major sports (to listen to/watch) until BETTING and T.V. pushed them into the limelight. Revenue sharing is a lousy policy and does NOT explain anything at all; least of which what you're attempting to.

When I spoke about a " free market ", in regards to baseball, I was talking about the aility of a team to purchase FREE AGENTS/ build up a team outside of the farm system, and the class warfare enthusiasts, here, who, rather than talk about the game/series, would far rather whinge about George's ability to " buy " players...which IS a sorry excuse, considering how many of the Yankees' est, c ame up from the farm team. :-)
