What does "cowboy up !" mean? It is a rodeo term cowboys use to signal it is time for the cowboy to get in the saddle and ride. It means the same as "time to roll", "bring it on", etc...it means...LET'S DO IT!

The term is being used in Baseball these days....not sure how they picked it up! COWBOY UP, RED SOX!

Good lord I don't have it NEAR as bad. *L* Just a bit of nickname calling here and there. Course when we were growing up brother #2 told me once when I had asked him why he picked on me 'Cause it's my job'.

Well (and I have to revise--I'M #1 in the sister list), so I was the one who had "the job." Working with sister #3, we almost convinced sister #2 she was adopted because she didn't look like us (we look like Dad, she looks like Mom). We would've succeeded, too, if she hadn't gone whining to our parents about it. It was perfect revenge, though, for sister #2 playfully shoving me against the car door & me falling out of the car....my last memory was her waving me buh-bye as they drove off without me (they came back & got me a few minutes later--that was a five-stitcher).

And we had to share clothes. And bedrooms.

Off to walk the dog before the game starts.

This is how I think it works . . .

The only way to pinch-hit for a player is to use someone off the bench. A starting pitcher is not permitted to bat in the game unless listed in the lineup at the start of the game. A relief pitcher can only bat in the game if he first pinch-hits for a position player (or the DH) and then takes the mound.

A pitcher who is not involved in the game can actually be placed in the starting lineup as a DH. I seem to remember the Yankees doing this once with Rick Rhoden back in the 1980s -- they had a string of injuries, and since he had been a decent hitter in the National League and they were facing a pitcher against whom he had had some success in the past, the manager (Billy Martin?) used him as the DH.

Using a pitcher as a DH like this is extremely rare, but at one time it wasn't always so -- the "Earl Weaver Rule" changed all that. Anyone who knows what the "Earl Weaver Rule" was should stand up and take a bow -- you really know your baseball!

Episode 22- Funeral for a Doornail

The Case

Roger Clemons hires Blue Moon to stop a hit, his own. Distraught over his wife's recent death, he decided life was not worth living and arranged for a hitman to kill him. Later he changes his mind when he thinks he sees her. Afraid that she might be alive, he asks Dave and Maddie to try to "unarrange" the hit and find his wife. They succesfully stop the hit, but he dies when his car explodes anyway. Maddie insists on looking foir Celia Clemons despite David's objections. Celia Clemons shows up at Blue Moon and explains why she faked her death. This leads Dave and Maddie to the person who killed Roger Clemons.

What's Really Going on Chris?

Maddie has to go to her cousin's wedding in Chicago. Her escort, an NSM (Nice Safe Man,) bowed out at the last minute and she doesn't want to go alone. So she asks David to go with her. He says yes, that he would be "delighted." Maddie is extremely uncomfortable that David is "delighted" to take her, she'd rather he "be OK with it." In Maddie's opinion, David is neither "nice" nor "safe" and she worries about their sleeping arrangements. Maddie would feel better if this were a business deal and David agrees to be paid. He demands $1200.00 to be a NSM for the weekend. Maddie is appalled. After Mr Clemons dies and Maddie vows to spend the weekend looking for his wife Celia, David realizes the opportunity is slipping away and offers to go for free. But it's too late, they're working this weekend and not going to Chicago. David is upset that they missed an opportunity for an "anything can happen weekend in the Windy City." He later tells Maddie that he hopes that she'll ask again, and that he's smart enough to say yes, and that they're smart enough to go.

Chris's Obsessive Analysis

Oh what could've been! Maddie was afraid and David was hoping that "something" would happen in Chicago. Alas, we'll never know. We, the fans, will have to settle with the satisfaction of knowing that Maddie asked David out- to a family event no less! It's interesting to wonder if their relationship would have progressed in a more healthy way if "something" had started in Chicago, rather than as a result of Sam.

The rules don't allow a position player to pinch hit for the DH. But if another pinch hitter is used for the DH, you cannot have another person DH and the pitcher must bat in that spot.

Interesting. I never knew that rule. I always thought that if there was an American League pitcher that could hit (I know, hypothetical question), that it would be acceptable to have him DH while pitching.

Since you seem to know the rules, how about this scenario that I never get a good answer on: Let's say that the Red Sox have a very agile outfielder (another hypothetical), the bases are loaded with nobody out, and a ball is driven deep, deep to center field. This outfielder takes a flying leap over the Yankee bullpen fence, smashes into Mariano Rivera and Jose Contreras, knocking them over like bowling pins, and makes an over-the-shoulder catch and robs the Yankees of a grand slam while still in the Yankee bullpen! This outfielder then has the presence of mind to fire the ball to the second baseman who then fires the ball to the first baseman FOR A TRIPLE PLAY! Remember, the Yankee runners are probably all the way to home plate by now, assuming it was a home run because the ball went into the bullpen.

Whenever I bring this scenario up to somebody, they usually say that this is an illegal play because once the player is out of the field of play, it is an automatic home run. But I say that if this is the case, then why do we often see catchers and first or third basemen diving into the crowd to catch a foul ball? If that counts as an out, then why can't a center fielder climbing (or jumping) into the bullpen make an out as well?
