Bush Blames Palestinian Authorities

Associated Press

President Bush blamed Palestinian authorities Wednesday for the deaths of Americans in an attack in Gaza, saying their failure to create terrorist-fighting security forces "continues to cost lives."

"Palestinian authorities should have acted long ago to fight terror in all its forms," the president said in a written statement as he flew to California for an overnight visit en route to Asia.

Bush said he condemned the attack in the strongest terms and that the United States was working with authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Putting the blame squarely on the Palestinian leadership, Bush said, "The failure to create effective Palestinian security forces dedicated to fighting terror continues to cost lives. There must be an empowered prime minister who contols all Palestinian forces - reforms that continue to be blocked by Yasser Arafat."

"The failure to undertake these reforms and dismantle the terrorist organizations constitutes the greatest obstacle to achieving the Palestinian people's dream of statehood," Bush said.

He said the Americans who were attacked were in Gaza to help build a better future for Palestinians.

"The U.S. embassy officials traveling in Gaza were there to interview young Palestinian candidates seeking Fulbright scholarships to study in the United States," Bush said. "This is another example of how the terrorists are enemies of progress and opportunity for the Palestinian people."

Bush was notified of the attack in a telephone call by National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice before he left the White House.

An FBI legal attache is investigating the bombing, which killed three Americans. It was the first attack on a U.S. target in three years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting.

The FBI's legal attache from Tel Aviv went to the bombing site and is working with Palestinian and Israeli authorities, said FBI spokesman Ed Cogswell in Washington.

The FBI has not yet determined yet whether more agents will be sent, but in the past it has taken a major role in overseas violence in which Americans are killed.

The bomb exploded under a U.S. diplomatic convoy, ripping apart an armored van in an unprecedented attack on an official U.S. target. There was no claim of responsibility for the bombing.

While targeting Israeli soldiers and civilians for years, groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad repeatedly insist they do not target U.S. officials - apparently to avoid a harsh retribution from the Americans and the anger of Palestinian officials trying to work with Washington.

The bombing, which also wounded a fourth American, will likely intensify U.S. pressure on the Palestinian Authority to take action against militant groups. Arafat, whom Bush has tried to sideline in favor of other leaders, condemned the attack as an "awful crime." Arafat said he ordered an investigation.

The explosion, detonated by a remote-controlled explosive device, occurred as the second vehicle of a three-car convoy had just cleared a checkpoint and entered Gaza, said State Department spokeswoman Brooke Summers.

The three persons who died were security personnel accompanying diplomats from the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, who were heading to interview Palestinian candidates for Fulbright scholarships, she said.

The U.S. Embassy advised U.S. citizens to leave the Gaza Strip after the attack.

State Department officials said they were asking the Israeli government to help evacuate any American wishing to leave the Gaza Strip. The department also is urging all American citizens on the West Bank to take all available precautions against possible attacks.

I'm not complaining about this article specifically being removed, but why is everything about this gaza bombing being swept off the Breaking News sidebar? This is a HUGE story, but Breaking News is still headed by day old stuff.

This article wasn't moved? It is still in breaking. As a matter of fact, I have my breaking sidebar configured to fit 20 items, and I see no less than 6 about Gaza.

"Explosion Near U.S. Convoy in Gaza Kills Three Americans"

"Bush Blames Palestinian Authorities" (for Gaza bombing of American diplomatic convoy)

"Yadda Yadda Yadda, blame, blame, blame, outrage, outrage, outrage"... Same old song and dance!

Ah yes, now that Americans have been blown to bits by the Islamonazis in Israel, Bush must demand America also follow the Powell Doctrine and:

"Exercise Restraint"

Oh I am sorry, that advice ONLY applies to Israel, when their people get blown into bite sized pieces... never mind.

Boy am I sick of this ring around the rosy!

When are the Bush administration and America going to wake up and realize that we are at war with people who want us all converted, dead or enslaved to Islamic masters, subjugated under Islamic law!

The only way this is ever going to get dealt with and peace will take root in the Middle East and the rest of the world is when genuine all-out war against these terrorists is waged and they are killed. Until then this is just like the phony "War on Drugs":

Money down the drain, lots of people hurt and dead with NOTHING to show for all of our efforts.

WWIII has begun, thousands of Americans, Isralies and citizens from nations throughout the world have been and are being killed on a daily basis and America had better get with the program and fight to win, or we are going to lose.

Wow, you're right. That's wierd. I thought for sure I'd refreshed the browse page I have open many times today, but until a few minutes ago it still had stories like "Cubs 3, Marlins 8, Final score (Going to Game 7) ~~ LIVE THREAD" near the top of the "Breaking News" sidebar. It's probably me rather than the software. Too many window open.

I often don't understand how "breaking news" is considered breaking or not. Most articles I post don't belong in "breaking" and I don't try to put them there. When I do post one there it gets deleted about 75% of the time.

After this, I see no reason why we should try to protect Arafat from exile if Israel has that planned for him.

I just like the "unbiased" title in the Yahoo version of this story.

"Bush blames Palestinians for Gaza deaths"

It isn't until you click on the link (which the story is the same as this one. From the AP) does it say that its the Palestinian Authorities that Bush is condemning.

So, does this mean that Bush is finally going to face up to Pallie terrorism or are dead Americans going to continue to be merely a cost of doing business with those cockroaches?

We're not negotiating with the Taliban, al-Qaeda, or the Ba'ath party. We never should have been negotiating with Pallie terrorists and sending them handouts. They need to be killed.

On the Palistinian street, the word will spread that it was actually an Israeli plot to undermine the Palistinians (just like 9/11).
Are you calling LibertyForum.org, Aryan Nations, Vanguard News Network... Palestinians?

"The U.S. embassy officials traveling in Gaza were there to interview young Palestinian candidates seeking Fulbright scholarships to study in the United States,"

Yeah, that's a good idea. Gee, sure is a shame we can't get some of those Palestinian law school students over here. I hear they're just dynamite!

He's not saying much these days. Maybe it's the quiet before the storm, or maybe just masterly inactivity.

It was the first attack on a U.S. target in three years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting.

Incorrect. The attack at the Hebrew University was in the english speaking student lounge, not the hebrew one Just a block away. They clearly were attacking the english speaking students, translated, Americans.

The palestinian that placed the bomb worked as a gardner on campus and clearly knew the different lounges.

This is the first attack on government level Americans. In the "New America" citizens are not "real" Americans, just Civil Servants are. Tourists and citizens over here do not count to the government. Twenty four Americans have died in the last three years from Palestinian Terrorism, but who's counting?

Good point! "There must be an empowered prime minister who contols all Palestinian forces"

was the very thing that the US forced down Israels throat claiming it would bring peace in the Oslo Accords. Now it is the path to peace to get rid of him and find another Arafat?!
