FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 26, 2003

Senator Fern Shubert has added a stance against Easley’s encouragement of illegal immigration as one of her top campaign issues in the race to become the next Governor of North Carolina. Shubert says Governor Easley’s encouragement of illegal immigration threatens national security and North Carolina’s future. “Why does he want to help people break the law?” Shubert asks.

“What we have here is a recipe for disaster!” Senator Shubert said. “The Democrats are raising taxes to pay for their policy of encouraging illegal immigration. Their policy is hurting North Carolina workers and running off jobs. Everywhere I go around the state, law enforcement officers, health care workers, and education professionals tell me about the enormous cost of illegal immigration and its negative impact on North Carolina. Their concern isn’t immigration; it is illegal immigration.”

Governor Mike Easley’s policies have made North Carolina a welcoming destination for people who break the law. “The D.M.V. in North Carolina, where illegal immigrants from the states on the Eastern seaboard go to get their driver’s licenses, is aware of its role, said Wayne J. Hurder, North Carolina’s director of driver’s license certification.” (The New York Times, 3/2/2003)

Hurder claims he acts to promote public safety, but as State Tech magazine says (October 2002), “fake identification documents and cards can open the door to devastating terrorist activities.” If fakes are dangerous, how about real licenses issued based on false documentation, as North Carolina does? Government Technology (April 2003) notes that “Drivers often secure multiple drivers’ licenses to conceal out-of-state criminal convictions and traffic violations.” How does helping criminals establish new fake identities promote public safety?

“Were you aware that our DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) is giving out driver’s licenses without real proof of identity or residence? Governor Mike Easley has rolled out the red carpet to illegal immigrants, encouraging them to come here, and it is costing North Carolinians their jobs.” Senator Shubert said. “Even California Governor Gray Davis recognized the threat to public safety posed by permitting illegal immigrants to use tax identification numbers (TINs) as proof of identity and twice vetoed legislation authorizing the use of TINs. North Carolina not only allows the use of Taxpayer Identification Numbers, which prove nothing, to establish identity, but we’ll let non-residents pay $2 to sign a sworn affidavit stating they live in North Carolina and accept that as proof of residence.”

Shubert continued, “Governor Mike Easley’s policies make establishing a false identity easy in North Carolina. His policies have encouraged the development of a network that not only assists illegal immigrants, but also encourages criminals, gangs, drug dealers, sex offenders, drunk drivers, and terrorists to enter our state.”

“North Carolinians are generous and compassionate people.” Senator Shubert said. “But these are dangerous times and we must put the protection of law abiding citizens ahead of political considerations. We must put the safety and well being of the citizens of North Carolina first. I am the candidate who will roll up Mike Easley’s red carpet for lawbreakers and support those who obey the law rather than those who ignore it. ###

It amuses me that some posters on this board berate California for recently allowing illegals to obtain driver's licenses while conveniently ignoring the fact that many conservative states such as NC and TN have pandering to illegals for years.

Illegal immigration is a problem that is no longer unique to California. It is spreading everywhere in America. No State/No Town/No Community is immune from the Aztlan invasion. NC Southerners ought to stop whining about Yankees moving into the Research Triangle Area. Illegal immigration is a far more serious threat than transplanted Yankees. If Southern folks don't do something to stop the influx of illegal invaders, then in 10 years Southerners shall be whistling Aztlan, instead of Dixie.

Here is a candidate for Governor who understands the problems of illegal immigration.

Do y'all know the stances of the other NC goobernatorial candidates?

They're all conservative (oh wait, does Vinroot really count as a candidate?) but they haven't posted their views on their websites yet (unless you want to mine through the Fern & Ballantine senate archives for details).

So far, Fern is the only one willing to talk about illegal immigration. I am willing to hear what Cobey and Ballantine have to say about the Aztlan Invasion. One good thing about Fern running for Governor is that she, being from Union County, will drain votes away from Richard Vinroot.

I somehow doubt that those two share much of a base, geography be darned :)

Who IS supporting Vinroot this time? Besides his family? Does he have any prominent Republicans supporting him? (I suppose some Charlotte folks might be sticking with him, but they could beg off by pointing to a possible McCrory candidacy after his reelection.) Is he raising money? Or just going into debt and and planning to spend another four years sending out letters begging for help retiring campaign debts incurred in a losing cause?

Please keep in mind that we are the only campaign for NC Governor addressing this issue. We need your help. It will take an army of grass roots supporters and a lot of funds to get this message out to the voters.

Your contributions of time and funds would go a long way in helping us on the road to victory.

Feel free to sign up or contribute at our website www.ForFern.com or give us a call at 1-877-GOV-FERN

There is a campaign kickoff event in Monroe NC, on Friday Oct 3. Details are avail on the website and Senator Shubert will address the crowd on this issue.

We just wanted to let the Free Republic community know that some left wingers are trying to attack our campaign at the News & Observer forum.

If any of you would come to our aid, we would appreciate it. Of course the more posts, the more attention to our cause.

Here is the link.

*** Since putting out this call for help to our fellow conservatives a battle has ensued on the n & O forum. Your help might help us to get this issue out. The response is astounding. Thanks for the cavalry! *** Staff

Dear Forum Participants:

We are glad to see such energetic responses and debate about our campaign issue opposing Easley’s encouragement of illegal immigration in North Carolina. We are watching your posts carefully and wish that we could be more active. A lot of our resources are focused on the campaign kickoff event this Friday, Oct 3 in Monroe, NC.

We need to raise funds to get our message out in the state. Anyone here interested in attending is invited, but if you can’t attend we still appreciate your support. More details can be found at our webpage www.ForFern.com

On the issue of debate, it would be nice if the entire state could join our discussion. However, our press release that is at the top of this thread was sent to all major media outlets on Friday. The media responsiveness is very low and we are starting to believe that our press release is being suppressed by the major newspapers in Raleigh and Charlotte.

Many of the smaller publications around the state wait for these publications to act before they cover the news.

It is clear and apparent from the level of active discussion here that the readership of these publications would be highly interested in the contents of our release. We have more information that we need to release that might shock you.

We appreciate all of you that are participating, even those of you that are not in full agreement with our stance. We may ask for your help in 24 hours in encouraging these major publications to allow the general public to know what is going on.

If you would like to help and such help is necessary we will put up suggestions for you 24 hours from now. This call for assistance will be accompanied by a new release to the smaller independent news sources for help as well. Let us hope that these publications will accurately convey our issue to the public before then. Has anyone seen this information in your local media?

Kind Regards,

Senator Fern Shubert
Candidate for NC Governor
