I don’t see the question as odd at all. I recently had this exact situation; Android phone no longer active with a carrier and used exclusively on wifi. Girlfriend same thing. We both installed Signal app and now can text again (you do need to input a number when you install Signal but it doesn’t have to be functional). And the texting works on wifi all over the world. No changing SIMs needed.
