FD can assist in an autopsy. The lab where the samples are sent make the determination. After embalming hundreds of bodies an FD can pretty much determine the case of death. FDs bury MD mistakes all the time

They don't cut the body open. They remove bodily fluids and replace with embalming fluids. Absent any obvious external trauma how do you determine the cause of death without opening the body?
