Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke drew a standing-room-only crowd of more than 200 people to a Minneapolis high school Wednesday.
The former Texas member of the U.S. House spoke in the Edison High School cafeteria about immigration, health care and other issues.
He exhorted the receptive crowd to work to defeat President Donald Trump and address those issues.
“It’s going to have to be all of us with all we’ve got,” he said.
O’Rourke began his remarks by name-checking Prince, the Replacements, Husker Du, Bob Dylan and Minnesota politicians that include the late Sen. Paul Wellstone, Gov. Tim Walz and Rep. Ilhan Omar. He said Omar is “staring down some really strong racist stuff” from Trump and others.
Democratic presidential hopefuls Mayor Pete Buttigieg and entrepreneur Andre Yang also visited the state this month, signaling that they aren’t ceding the state to Minnesota’s own Sen. Amy Klobuchar.
Ana Acosta, a Minneapolis immigration lawyer, said she’s intrigued by O’Rourke’s leadership in border issues.
“He’s really the only candidate who speaks to this issue coming from knowledge,” she said.
After the town hall, O’Rourke spent more than an hour posing for individual photos with the audience.
