Buttigieg Steers Clear of Mentioning Trump in Kickoff, Promises New Way to Attract Rural Voters

While launching his official campaign for the Democratic nomination in his home state of South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg avoided mentioning President Donald Trump by name and instead spoke in broad strokes about politicians who use empty promises to pander to rural and industrial communities.

“There is a myth being sold to industrial and rural communities,” the 37-year-old mayor said, speaking on stage at a former Studebaker automobile building. “It comes from people who think the only way to speak to communities like ours is through resentment and nostalgia. They are selling the impossible promise of returning to a bygone era that was never as great as advertised to begin with.”

He continued: “The problem is that they are telling us to look for greatness in all of the wrong places, because if there is one thing that the city of South Bend has shown it’s that there is no such thing as an honest politics that revolves around the word 'Again.'”

The Sunday announcement moves Buttigieg’s campaign past the exploratory stage that proved successful in drumming up national attention. Despite not mentioning Trump on Sunday, the multi-lingual Harvard graduate has so far gained traction by positioning himself as not merely a Democrat, but the antithesis of the president in both policy and demeanor.

Buttigieg’s candidacy would mark the first time an openly gay politician has snagged a spot on a major party’s ticket, and he would also be the youngest leader to serve in the Oval Office, barely a few years older than the legally minimum age. The historic implications of his campaign were a centerpiece of the kickoff.

“I know it’s a little bold,” Buttigieg said, drawing laughs from the crowd.

South Bend was once the corporate home of Studebaker. More than likely that is it.

Ahh yes. South Bend. Once the home of Studebaker brothers wagon and auto builders. Seems fitting. Well known for the Lark and military M29 Weasel. Also sent the bulk of its WW2 truck production to RUSSIA.

And now home to a gilded lip little commie looking for federal employment. Cant wait to be introduced to his family.

When I think of who primarily voted for him for mayor, all I can say is that the wrong Notre Dame is burning.

Too soon?
