Conservatives have always been on both sides of the tariff issue. As a Jeffersonian, in the past, I have always been for low tariffs for economic reasons. But as a true Conservative, who as a true Conservative is morally obligated to consider the social effects of policy on his own community; that very Conservatism now forces me to adjust that past opinion.

Treating trade policy as some sort of absolute, to the point where it interferes with patriotic duty to your fellow countrymen is not Conservative--not in the least.

Donald Trump on the other hand, is an instinctive Conservative, finally waking up to a crisis that too many long time Conservative activists have been misled to ignore.

Trump: Metaphor For American Conservatism.

Communities all across America need what Donald has to offer.

Conveniently disregarding the fact that we surrender sovereignty and most of all, our borders would be more wide open than they are today.

"In general, the protective system of our day is conservative, while the free trade system is destructive. It breaks up old nationalities and pushes the antagonism of the proletariat and the bourgeoisie to the extreme point. In a word, the free trade system hastens the social revolution. It is in this revolutionary sense alone, gentlemen, that I vote in favor of free trade.”

— Karl Marx before the Democratic Association of Brussels January 9, 1848

everyone because free trade is a conservative value.

If you cared about correcting your misconceptions, you could research the Republican Platform versions going back to about Abe Lincoln.

Free trade between the states; fair trade with foreign nations -- that is the historical Republican Party Platform position on trade.
