Why Iowa Voter Registration Data Point To A Ted Cruz Victory In Iowa

Only a few days out from the Iowa Caucuses, we still don’t know what to expect. The polls look more like darts tossed by a drunk than a discernible pattern. Worse still, we don’t really even know what they are measuring.

There is one critical factor in a caucus system that makes it different from a primary. Unlike a primary that may have early voting and absentee voting and where the voters straggle in over the course of a 12-hour day, in a caucus you actually have to get your voters to a caucus site within a relatively small envelop of time. Historically, this has meant that a successful candidate had to have a strong ground game composed of door-to-door canvassers, phone banks, and local influencers who could get people out of their houses on a cold and perhaps snowy night in Iowa and get them to mingle with idiots people they hate barely know...

I can’t change your mind and won’t try, but don’t be surprised on February 2nd when all the “Cruzers” are crowing.

https://www.iowagop.org/caucus-participation/

...At 7:00pm, each precinct will be called to order by the temporary chair, an individual appointed by the county party.

After a permanent chair and secretary are elected by the body, business can begin.

Since 2016 is a presidential election year, the first item of business will be to conduct a presidential preference poll.

After the results are tabulated and announced, other state and county party business will proceed. This official business includes:

*Electing county Republican central committee members

*Electing delegates, alternate delegates, and junior delegates to the county convention

*Electing members of standing committees to the county convention (depending on the county)

*Discussing, submitting, and voting on platform planks to the county convention

Following the precinct caucus, an additional three tiers of conventions will be held, moving grassroots delegates and platform proposals from the precinct level to the county, congressional district, and state conventions...

As Iowa radio talker and Ted Cruz supporter Steve Deace has noted, the polls giving Trump the largest leads are based turnout models that have 300K Iowans attending a caucus.

Supposedly, Trump will bus them in from out of state to vote.

I wouldn’t worry about that. Iowa PCOs are pretty organized about credentialing voters—even new ones.

I vote absentee, but I would stand in line to vote Trump

The Republican presidential preference poll is relatively straight forward. Once you are in your precinct and your precinct meeting has been called to order, usually the chair of your caucus will invite anyone to speak briefly in support of their favored candidate. Once all speeches have concluded, each eligible voter in the caucus will be given a piece of paper to either write or mark their choice. After everyone has filled out their secret ballot, the votes are counted in the precinct and announced to the room. All the precincts of a county are collected by party leadership and then reported to the Republican Party of Iowa to tabulate the state results.

Learn how to caucus

Unlike elections, which use the state election materials (ballots, voting machines, and so on), a caucus uses the party's devices for collecting and counting ballots.

A caucus will take more time out of your day than voting will, but it's a simple process.

They didn’t win because of Iowa.
