Do Trump Voters Really Exist? How Both Parties Botched Iowa
The Daily Beast ^ | January 26, 2016 | Gideon Resnick

Bernie and Trump boast about inspiring new people to head to the polls but less than a week away from the Iowa caucuses, the number of registered voters has decreased in the state over the past year.

If the major political parties had some trick up their sleeves to get more voters registered ahead of the Iowa caucus, it hasn't happened yet.

With under a week left until people vote for the first time in 2016, the number of registered Democrats and Republicans has remained fairly static in the last six months. So the big crowds at rallies for Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump--where they boast of attracting new caucus goers in droves--hasn't translated into big gains when it comes to registered support.

At least not yet.

According to statistics from the Iowa Secretary of State's office, the number of registered Republicans has decreased from January 2015 until January 2016. The same can be said for Democrats. The number can typically fluctuate as registered members of either party do not participate in a given cycle and the actual number of participants who register on the actual caucus night will not be finally tallied until months later, after auditors extensively pour over the numbers....

After the first debate I was sympathetic towards Trump mainly because I don't like to see people be mistreated and considered him as a candidate because of his strength and the experience he has with age. My hope was that if Cruz turned out to be too young and inexperienced that he could at least be on the ticket with Trump.

That was before I was made aware that Trump had mocked a handicapped journalist, a man that has EVERYTHING thought it was OK to make fun of someone less fortunate than him, someone that has a real life struggle. Selfishly I still tried to keep an open mind in hopes that Cruz wouldn't be sidelined.

Then Trump used the 911 Victims to score a point against Cruz in the last debate, people who died tragically in an attack on our country and he continues to ruthlessly attack Cruz trying to damage his reputation in the Senate where Cruz is an American hero who stands up to the Cartel. Trump has showed horrible character traits that would scare me if he was only a neighbor. He disrespects everyone that gets within range of him even his own supporters that he made fun of with the Fifth Avenue remark. He is unfit for the office of the Presidency.

FreeRepublic is resilient and will recover as it always does. My wish is that FR could somehow go back to its roots of conservatism which it seems to have strayed from along with the rest of the country.

Reasoned, logical arguments made by reasonable people who are treated with such disrespect - they just left.

I have one foot out the door myself - pinglists are all shut off, tore down my profile page, just hanging around a day or two to finish up...

Dear Finny,

Someone sent me a copy of your post from “over there.”

Got news for you.

It’s not about Trump. It’s not about Romney. It’s not about McCain. It’s not about the GOP. It’s not about “ConservaTISM.” It’s not about me and it’s not about money and it’s not about FR.

It’s about the survival of America as a free nation, free people.

I would’ve given up my left leg to prevent Obama from ascending to the presidency in 2008, and my right leg to prevent Obama from gaining a second term to screw up our nation in 2012.

I regret that I had but two legs to give for my country.

Now we’re talking arms.

As long as God allows me to draw breath, I will give my all to help prevent another godless, America-hating Marxist/fascist/communist, ie, Hillary, Bernie, et al follow Obama to the presidency.

Other than that, hate to lose good friends.

God bless.

Jim, thanks for the reply. Yes, you are right, it is NOT about you.

For most of us here, Free Republic is about one thing, and one thing only:

Free exchange of conservative political opinion.

When FR ceases to become that, FR ceases to become attractive or useful.

Dear Finny, Someone sent me a copy of your post from "over there."

This one?

" ... a willingness to alienate loyal donating FReepers is puzzling. For a guy like Trump, it would be a small investment reaping RICH returns by funding FR. However, I take Jim Robinson at face value that he is a true conservative. So I wonder -- why doesn't he see that by censoring those who civilly (if passionately and even angrily) express a particular conservative opinion in a discussion, he removes the thing that makes FR attractive? People aren't going to donate to something that lets them down.

"The only way FR remains a genuine forum for conservatives to express opinion freely, is to adhere to the policy of ONLY censoring folks for profanity or personal attack devoid of issue relevance; zotting folks expressing leftist opinions or candidates, fine, but on FR, zotting conservatives for expressing civilly expressed if unpopular conservative opinion is killing the golden goose. A beautiful, complex, easy-to-navigate, efficient cyber community that is falling apart at the seams. It can be mended still.

"But it would be just like Trump to use his money to kill a golden goose like FR in order to win."

Sincerely, Jim, thanks for such a great place for so long.

You put All in your ping box so I guess this post applied to me also. Finny did ping you to this discussion and thought that you would participate so this was nothing on the sly.

Am sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your arms. Will keep you in my prayers.

Have enjoyed my time spent here and the knowledge I've gained so thank you for the opportunity and the hospitality.
