Alberta-born Sen. Ted Cruz has given up his Canadian dual citizenship. The renunciation became official on May 14, roughly 9 months after he learned he wasn't only an American.
Cruz received notification by mail on Tuesday at his home in Houston.
"He's pleased to receive the notification and glad to have this process finalized," said spokeswoman Catherine Frazier.
Cruz's birth in Canada was never a secret. But it proved a political liability, with detractors taunting him as "Canadian Ted" and critics suggesting that his birthplace made him ineligible to run for president.
The dual citizenship came as a surprise to Cruz and his parents when The Dallas Morning News reported on it last August.

I don’t believe he didn’t know until a year ago.
How can a Naturally Born Citizen of the US also be born with duel citizenship? Is that even possible?
Huh? Surprise?
That is bulllll
So what passport parents and kids had?
Grayson is waiting with lawsuit to challenge eligibility and media are sharpening their spears.
Yes. Many countries have birthright citizenship.
In theory, the United States frowns upon dual citizenship. You’re supposed to choose one or the other by the time you become an adult.
In practice, Uncle Sam makes it difficult to renounce U.S. citizenship even if you have citizenship elsewhere. In fact, FedGov about a year ago nearly quadrupled the fees you had to pay for privilege of renouncing U.S. citizenship in favor of another country’s citizenship.
I’m not a lawyer. Don’t know the rules. I hope others on FR will weigh in on the legalities.
My son was born in Germany in ‘92. Thankfully, they’d stopped the dual citizenship shortly before that, but I was still looking for reassurance.
I was flat-out told at the US Consulate that being born abroad wouldn’t hamper my son in any way but one.
He could never run for President of the United States.
After a few months of Trudeau the Canadians may decide not to accept his renunciation and come to Washington D.C. to forcibly remove him and install him as Canada’s president!
Last time their military came to D.C. they left it a smoking ruin...
So, another reason to vote for Cruz!
The question is what constitutes “Natural Born”?
Our youngest daughter was born in Canada. Both of us were natural born citizens at the time, there because it was the best hospital for us at the time.
Our daughter carried dual citizenship until she graduated from college and got her first job teaching HS math. She had to give up her Canadian citizenship in order to get that job.
I am sure Cruz knows the rules, but wonder about his “not knowing” since he might have been required to disclose this to get his law license. But, I do not know all the rules and technicalities involved.
Hope the Dems don’t make an issue of it if he wins the primary. They shouldn’t given the nonsense surrounding BHO, but as we all know, they have double standards, and no shame.
And perhaps Trump did not know that. This also could be another media hitjob on Trump
No, it wasn’t a surprise. Just more lying.
I have dual citizens in my family and it’s a big deal.
The US government really doesn’t like it, either.
The most logical reading of that term is someone who is a citizen by virtue of their birth, as opposed to a naturalized citizen. By US law, a person is a citizen at birth if, A) they are born on US soil (including US territories, military bases or embassies); or B) they are born to at least one parent who is a US citizen. There are people who will argue that NBC refers ONLY to those born on US soil to 2 US citizen parents, but no court has ever upheld that definition, so that is their own opinion, not fact.
Sure it can. It just happens that Ted was born in one of the countries that will grant dual citizenship to the children of citizens of other countries that happened to be born while in the country. His parents did not seek Canadian citizenship for him, as he was automatically a US citizen by birth ("natural-born").
US passports. His mother was a US citizen in Canada on a work visa.
Both parents are American Citizens.
