Less than a decade ago, Donald Trump could be spotted on TV or in print gushing over Hillary Clinton. He publicly praised her health care plan (it had an individual mandate). He said he liked Clinton and her husband âvery much.â He said she would do a good job negotiating with Iran.
During the heat of the 2008 campaign, Trump took to his own blog to praise Clinton, writing that sheâd make a great president.
âHillary Clinton said sheâd consider naming Barack Obama as her vice-president when she gets the nomination, but sheâs nowhere near a shoo-in,â wrote The Donald about the heated Democratic primary in 2008. âFor his part, Obama said heâs just focused on winning the nomination, although at least one member of his team said Clinton would make a good vice-president. (I know Hillary and I think sheâd make a great president or vice-president.)â
BuzzFeed News previously uncovered past Hillary Clinton praise on his Trump University blog, calling her a âgreat trouper.â
I think we all opposed McCain. Then he became the nominee, and picked Sarah Palin (who helped the ticket, contrary to what the media would like you to believe.) Then most people were reluctantly on board.
Well, Bush was a “conservative” — just ask him.
Look, I like Trump. I’m originally from New York, and I know all the good things he’s done for the city and state — and other communities where he’s been a developer. (And we must acknowledge that he’s had his share of failures, like any businessman.)
I think a lot of what Trump says is very good. But we also must acknowledge that at least some of it contradicts long-held positions. We rightly criticized Mittens for flip-flopping like that, but somehow if you make the same point about Trump, you’r working for the Washington cartel — even though it’s true. And too many of his supporters (not all) twist themselves around like pretzels to defend him blindly, no matter what he says or does or what he said or did in the past.
That’s exactly the same kind of cult of personality that we all find so offensive about 0bama. As bad as G.W. Bush was in many ways, he never really had that cult of personality around him. (Sanders has it too, BTW. So does Hillary.)
Our job is to find the most conservative candidate who is viable and nominate that person, then campaign hard to make sure we get the most conservative president possible.
That decision should be made not on a cult of personality nor on bombastic rhetoric, but on the record of the candidates. The mere fact that someone prefers a different candidate than you do does not make them liberal trolls or agents of the Uniparty.
There is no 100 percent perfect candidate. There are things about Trump’s record that should be disturbing to any constitutionalist conservative. We need to give his record a full examination, good and bad, as we do for any other candidate, and not beat up on people for raising issues that might not put him in a great light.
If he still comes out looking like the best candidate to you, that’s your choice. But please know WHY you’re making that choice and please look at the full record before you commit to it.
And if someone else looks like the best candidate to another poster, that’s good too, and we should be able to debate, compare and contrast, and discuss without the vitriol that too many members of the cult of personality are throwing at anyone who dares criticize “their guy.”
Stop it — that’s what liberals do. Let’s not be like them.
I’m not anti-Trump, but I’m concerned about certain aspects of his record.
No, he actually doesn't. He is conservative on some things, including a few important ones. But he is quite liberal on a number of things.
The most consistent conservative in the race is Ted Cruz.
The brothels of Hungry??? I would have taken you more seriously if you had left that out.
He was under armed protection as a multibillionaire long before he ran for president and acquired at taxpayers expense the finest protection available in the world.
As Trump's meanness reveals, as Trump's cynical participation in crony capitalism confirms, as Trump's greed and selfishness in his serial bankruptcies make indisputably clear, Donald Trump has never sacrificed anything of his own except to advance a very personal and very selfish ambition.
Why do you resort to personal attacks against fellow conservatives? If you want to support Trump you can vote for him and even advocate on his behalf but there is no decent reason to ape his character flaws and engaged in serial personal attacks.
I spelled Hungary correctly.
You must admit, Trump has quite a proclivity for Eurotrash East Europeans.
Hank
Ivana was a Olympic skier. Melania eiter has a degree in architectural design or had been in school for that - not hard to understand that because of her looks her better career choice was being photographed.
Of the three the one who I might say is trashy is the American - Marla Maples who went after a married man and she wasn’t an innocent bystander.
You being a guy - you tell me HONESTLY if you could have resisted Marla or Melania or Ivana - if you had the wherewithall to interest them.
I’m not saying DJT is flawless...he’s lived his life - but I believe he is who we need now and am grateful he has stepped up to the plate. This isn’t a career for him, it’s a mission to get the USA back after years of abuse.
oh which of Trump’s policy objectives are not conservative? Please use his actual policy objectives not some bs anti-Trump MSM hit piece or your own conjecture. Trump’s policy objectives can be found on his campaign site, go educate yourself.
Considering your blatantly wrong nonfactual comment you must still be asleep. Happy New Year snoozier.
As recently as August, he was talking about a path for illegals.
He has praised single-payer healthcare, as recently as the first GOP debate. (And in his book, “The America We Deserve”.)
He’s a supporter of using eminent domain to take property and turn it over to developers.
He told Sean Hannity that he was against fully defunding Planned Parenthood.
He supports bailouts, too-big-to-fail and big, taxpayer-funded government intervention in dying industries.
In 1999, Trump suggested the government collect $5.7 trillion in new revenue by levying a one-time tax on all individuals and trusts worth more than $10 million.
He can’t make up his mind on ISIS, saying he would “bomb the s—t out of them” but also saying “it’s not our fight” and we should let Russia do it.
Those are a few of his “progressive” policies.
Pathway for legal immigrants, if we need them, after DEPORTING ALL illegals!
Competitive private insurance healthcare (we call it Free Enterprise ya wee socialist troll), and Medicare for indigent like we already have and nobody is saying they will end.
The President doesn’t make Eminent Domain policy, that has been decided by SCOTUS .. a non issue regarding a President.
That he WOULD defund all abortions at Planned Parenthood. If there were any beneficial services at PP that funding MIGHT remain. That is Donald being Donald...he will find no beneficial services at PP. *wink wink* LOL you don’t get Donald at all, figures!
Was and is against the taxpayer bailouts of too big to fail...you fail again!
In 1999 ? hahaha ...you were void of facts then too yes? Trump has the most conservative and lowest income tax plan of anyone running. Lowering the top rate from 39.6 percent to 25 percent and creating a large zero bracket. The plan would also reform the business tax code by reducing the income tax on all businesses to 15 percent and eliminate business tax expenditures, including deferral and interest deductions. In addition, the plan would eliminate the Estate Tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax. And lower all other tax bracket rates. Resulting in cutting taxes by $11.98 trillion over the next decade. No wonder you hate Trump...are you a Yeb boy or a Hilliary groupie? Maybe a Bernie bot, he loves higher taxes.
Trump on ISIS - “I will destroy ISIS...I will bomb the s**t out ISIS...I will take all their oil away” ... Asked what he would be saying if he were in the White House right now, Mr. Trump said: “Oh, I would be saying, ‘Let’s go, folks.”
“And I would be getting other countries,” Trump said.” “I would say we’re going to bomb the hell out of ‘em. We’re going to get ‘em right now.’
Trump like the rest of us non-code pinkies like you, are just fine with Russia expending their blood and treasure killing these ISIS bast**ds. Are you pro-ISIS too? Geez are you sure you are at the right site mohammed?
So there it is, you continue to post bs, twist statements by Trump, give half quotes and try and mislead FReepers but you aren’t foolin anybody kid!
Not just leagl immigrants. The question was about what to do with illegals.
Trump has rpeatedly prasied single payer, government health care — not private enterprise solutions. He’s started talking about those lately, but it’s a recent development.
I heard the interview about PP. he told Sean that he they do a lot of good (really, Donald? Name one thing) and he didn’t want to defund that.
He is a fan of Big Government ins many aspects of our lives. The Trump supporters should simply acknowledge that and explain why they support him anyway (he does have a few good things going for him). No candidate is 100 percent, down the line perfect.
Instead, too many on this site (Greetings_puny_Human is a prime example) will not brook the slightest criticism and throw invective around, instead of simply acknowledging the truth.
