When the Republican candidates take stage in Cleveland for the first presidential debate, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry will likely be watching from his hotel room somewhere. The candidate who briefly dominated polling in the 2012 contest and began this campaign in the middle of the pack, looks to settle in 11th or 12th place when the debate cut-off is set.
His relegation to the consolation stage hours before the main debate is largely a consequence of the ongoing Donald Trump boomlet. While almost all candidates have suffered in the polls as the real estate developer has surged to the top of the pack, few have suffered so directly from the Trump phenomenon. Perry seemed to bet his early candidacy on attacking Trump. That strategy has backfired spectacularly.
When Trump launched his presidential campaign in early July, he led with a broadside against illegal immigration and focused specifically on criminal activity of illegal aliens. Political commentators and the media naturally seized on Trumps remarks, but Perry took specific issue with the comments. He criticized Trump strongly on cable news shows and even released a video attacking Trump.
A few weeks later, when Trump made an off-the-cuff remark about Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and seemingly criticized his war record, Perry again jumped into the fray and demanded the competing candidate apologize for the remarks....

Don’t attack each other. Attack Hillary and Obama and their policies. The one who does that the best will win.
“Dont attack each other. Attack Hillary and Obama and their policies”
Why not? Most of these clowns are Hitlery and Ovomit shills.
oops
Perry out of the progressive closet.. how do you like that..
Very dumb move.. He needs to be watched.. could be a “snitch”..
“Donald Trump boomlet”
Boomlet: a brief increase, as in business activity or political popularity.
Breitbart’s Big Government? Jebbots?
Jebbots: Brown nosers for Jeb.
Tell that to the GOPe.
Perry and the Royal “WE”... -FoxNews Sunday with Chris Wallace yesterday! Perry creeps me out!
I think you will agree that you did not do well in debates last time — which raises the question whether it’s this debate or some of the others, aren’t they more important to you than they are perhaps to any other candidate, so that you can show that you are not Rick Perry of 2012, but youre a new and improved Rick Perry?
PERRY: Well, you’re kind in that observation. But, yes, I think a lot of people are waiting for that 6th of August debate. And they know our record. They know that this is a governor that is overseeing the 12th largest economy in the world for the last 14 years, and from ‘07 to 2014, created 1.5 million jobs while the rest of the country lost 400,000 jobs. They know that we’re, you know, socially conservative. All of those things have penetrated through.
They want to see a debate performance that is, you know, more than passable. I will suggest to you that’s exactly what they’ll get.
WALLACE: So, what are you doing — I mean, how are you preparing? And is it in the back of your mind I can’t afford another oops moment?
PERRY: Well, I have not made it any secret that my preparation has been substantially more than what it was four years ago. We got in this process late. We had had major back surgery. We were not prepared physically or mentally, and it reflected that.
So, the preparation is going to be very reflective of what we’ve done. I think people will see a very, very focused, disciplined candidate and you add that to the record, and I feel very comfortable about where we are at this particular moment in time.
As a Tea Party Texan. Perry aint no good for nothing except shooting a coyote. One of the main reasons our economy is good is because he had very little to do with it.
F him
Of all the posts on FR in the last two months, your assertion that Breitbart is a pro Jeb website is perhaps the most absurd........reading what you did into “boomlet” is a very advanced stage of paranoia. They’re doing wonderful things with drugs these days. Check it out.
Maybe Rick has tapeworms.

********
Who’s this “we” he is referring to?
Breitbart has had very positive coverage of Trump since he declared. One of the few media outlets, including “conservative” media that have.
See #12.
No, if you want to win you may need to attack. If you do, better be able to back it up and be ready for the response. Perry wasn’t, plus no one either heard what he said or wanted to hear what he said. His 15 minutes were up years ago and embarrassing that he thought he had chance to try again.
His glasses make him look smart!
Rick shot himself in the foot when he promised to seal Texas borders despite the Feds and then reneged. Now he is unloading into other extremities.
As I listened (BRIEFLY), I was appalled at the way he talks. He really does not project intelligence. Instead, he talks as if he really has to think about what he is saying. Maybe the "we" is a guy with a Microphone whispering into an earpiece part of his glasses...
I am a SarahPac donor, and now am looking at Cruz and "The Donald". I actually think they both could do a good job. If they got together, "whoa nellie"! I actually may regain some hope for Amerika. Both of them have a positive outlook and both seem to have some sort of a plan!
It’s not a attack if Rick Perry could be a switch over flight risk to go back over to the DNC.
Remember Rick Perry was elected to the Texas state House in 1984 as a Democrat, his father was a Democrat.
