Weekend Iowa poll: No Trump slump yet for McCain remarks

Donald Trump ignited a political furor with his weekend comments about Sen. John McCain's war record, but the first polling released since then shows no change in his standing.

A Monmouth University poll of Iowans released Monday and conducted over the weekend showed Scott Walker continues to maintain a solid lead in the Iowa Republican caucus, though Trump has gained an edge over the rest of the field and now stands alone in second place.

Of likely caucus attendees, 22% told pollsters that they'd support the Wisconsin governor in next winter's matchup, but 13% said they would back Trump, who has suddenly catapulted to the front of some national polls. Trump only earned 4% of Republicans' support in a Des Moines Register/Bloomberg survey conducted in May, a month before Trump announced his campaign and made a string of controversial comments that came alongside his rise.

The Monmouth poll was fielded while Trump found himself embroiled in a new controversy over a remark that seemed to disparage the military record of 2008 nominee McCain while at an event in Iowa. The poll found no change in Trump's support before and after he made his comment this weekend in Iowa....

Mc Lame is not the hero he claims to be. No reason for a slump.

The only reason he had a chance was his running mate and he stabbed her in back like he stabbed all those families of POWs.

I never said this would hurt Trump. I said it deflected all the bad stuff McCain did and would help McCain. But I doubt these polls would reflect that anyway. Trump’s polls are driven by constant media attention. The media is pumping him up at full tilt.

Attacking Trump with McCain is like attacking Africa with the Italian army. The problem the GOPe has is that no one with integrity is amongst them.

To a regular candidate this would have been the end of their try for the White House—But Trump isn’t your average GOP candadate. Its just like Bill Clinton was not hurt by his charges of Womanizing—everyone knew it when he was elected. Its just Bill being Bill. Same with Trump’s bomblastic talk—people know he loves his country. Its just Trump getting angry at McCain. Lots of folks don’t like Mccain in any case. Its Trump being Trump. Reminds me of Truman using swear words—most thought that would sink him—it didn’t because it was just Harry being Harry. Nixon got in trouble when he was caught swearing like a sailor (he was in the Navy after all) because he cultivated a goody two shoes persona—and it was out of sink for him to use such colorful talk. This will not stop Trump.

“The MSM has badly miscalculated how widely McCain is loathed.”

Bingo! That audience in Iowa the other night did not boo Trump when he made his remarks and gave him a standing ovation when he left the stage so they were obviously not too upset about it.

John McCain is a despicable human being who has serially betrayed his constituents and the Republican party for 30 plus years as well as showing on going poor judgment on almost everything.

The conservative base did not like McCain in 2008, but held their noses and voted for him. Nobody likes him any better now.

Whatever he did in the War, as a “Republican” he’s been a turncoat. In the Senate he has not done anything to earn respect, gratitude or loyalty from American voters. He should have been convicted for his part in the Keating Five. So it’s not what he did in the War, it’s what he’s done to the country since then. Attacking a man like this, if Trump did, is not a big deal for a lot of voters.
