Republicans fear Trumpnado
The Washington Examiner ^ | July 3, 2015 | David M. Drucker

How do you solve a problem like The Donald?

Top Republicans are flummoxed by billionaire businessman and entertainer Donald Trump, 69, and are unsure how worried they should be that his frequent offensive comments could taint the GOP brand and damage the party's prospects against Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee.

Republican operatives working in the primary campaign fret that Trumpisms, such as calling illegal immigrants from Mexico "rapists," as he did last month when announcing his bid for the Republican nomination, could doom the party with minorities and independents in the 2016 general election.

Many veteran party bigwigs are unconcerned, however, dismissing the New Yorker as a clown whose campaign will be overshadowed by the depth and quality of the GOP's White House field.

Charlie Black, a Washington lobbyist who has advised Republican candidates going back to Ronald Reagan and is officially neutral in the 2016 primary, likened Trump to Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul. He said those two candidates had "outlier" messages and garnered much attention but had no impact on the image of the eventual Republican nominees.

"Donald is a sideshow and a distraction right now," Black told the Washington Examiner in an email. "Once the debates start next month and more candidates get more coverage and interest, his prominence in the race will decline. He will end up not getting very many votes, so he will not define the brand. The nominee will do that."

At the moment, that's the consensus among wealthy Republican donors and campaign bundlers....

‘Charlie Black’ says what?

Oh that Buchanan had ‘candidates had “outlier” messages and garnered much attention but had no impact on the image of the eventual Republican nominees’

Charlie’s out of touch with a lot. To start, that republicans are in the majority in the congress and the democrats are still in charge

How about no republican except the bushes who has run for president has won since Ronald Reagan.

The bushes are an enormously powerful political dynasty

I don’t count tgem

The “brand” is transparent. It can’t be tarnished.

Just watched Huckabee on CNN make the case for illegal’s coming over as it’s okay if their seeking a better life regardless of the law.

Not surprised at his misguided compassion.

Little Rock, Ark -- As governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee aggressively pushed for the early release of a convicted rapist despite being warned by numerous women that the convict had sexually assaulted them or their family members, and would likely strike again. The convict went on to rape and murder at least one other woman.

The GOP is in a tizzy because they’ve spent 20 years ignoring their constituents and we’ve had ENOUGH! They’ve refused to enforce border security and have had it both ways too long. Now that we’ve been over-run with ILLEGALS that are ruinng our schools, getting “free” services from our hospitals, social security and food stamps - they are still turning a deaf ear to our cries. We taxpayers have had ENOUGH!

Ted Cruz is the only one running who hasn’t dumped on Trump for his remarks. He is my man and I appreciate Trump making this an issue because it is a winning issue for any serious and respectable candidate that wants to be our next president.

Calling Mexican illegal immigrants rapists

The truth is offensive? Have they heard about the Rape Trees on the border?

He called them murderers and a day later one of them did just that .

But its daily life here in Aztlan. Read the Salinas, Ca news for just a week or so and you'll be shocked: almost every few days they kill each other. It only gets out of the bubble when its a gringa. Even killing the occasional gringo is ho-hum.

One of the things I like about Trump is he says what he wants to say. No worries about getting elected again like many other candidates who dance around issues or use a poll to find their position. Still Cruz is my favorite thus far.

...They took Reagan very seriously and he almost took the nomination from Ford but Reagan was a serious candidate...

Look further back in Reagan’s political career.
Nobody took Reagan seriously when he left the Democrat Party in 1962 and ran for office in 1967. An actor, fresh off TV havng been an actor and more recently being the narrator of TV’s Death Valley Days program. He was constantly scorned and ridiculed.
Sound familiar? Undoubtedly.

Not that I love the Donald or anything, but “Top Republicans” = “Chamber of Commerce-owned RINOs”.

Let ‘em fear. We’re mad as Hell, and we’re not going to take it anymore!

Sure but Reagan went on to win respect and did not assume he should become president instantaneously. There’s no comparison. Trump is acting like a fool because he is.

” ... Trump is making the eGOP and the Rats nervous ... “

Exactly. Whatever he is—and right now he’s a loose cannon careening around the deck, exploding every few seconds—he’s raising Hell with the Beltway crowd.
IOW, he’s doing what we thought hot shot former prosecutor Gowdy would do to the Democrats after Sir Dudley Issa shooting blanks for years, only to mourn Trey’s demise to Tidal pool tse tse fly sleeping sickness.
My own rep has succumbed to the offer of a committee chair offer and is now a Boner lapdog.

Let The Donald go. He’s on a roll. More power to him.

“Trump is acting like a fool because he is.”

That is a quote right out of newspapers, TV, magazines, and other media about Reagan in his early years. History is what it is.
