Is there an inherent danger in electing a freshman Republican senator to the American presidency in 2016? After all, if one of the biggest criticisms then-candidate Obama faced from conservatives in 2008 was that he was too inexperienced, why should Republicans turn around and nominate someone like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio or Rand Paul this election cycle? If were being honest with ourselves, are they really any more qualified than he was?
As it happens, this is a question some of my colleagues debated last week during a panel discussion at CPAC:

I agree with Katie that successful governors have a much better case to make for why they deserve the nomination than senators. I also agree with Erick that its somewhat hypocritical for conservatives to endorse a freshman Senator in 2016 after assailing then-Sen. Obamas resume (or lack thereof) during the 2008 campaign. But these kinds of questions are almost peripheral to what matters most; namely, nominating a candidate who can win the general election.
As Mitt Romneys candidacy painfully showed us, Republicans can consolidate behind the most qualified person in America to serve as president. But if that person loses, their credentials, business acumen, and potential matter naught. Of course, there is a real risk in nominating a candidate who is (ahem) appealing to the base but lacks true leadership qualities and executive experience. But wouldn't you rather nominate a candidate who is unproven and can win than suffer the consequences of four or eight years of President Hillary Clinton?
Was dope recently legalized in Virginia?
But he don't KNOW nothin'
Yeah ... ain't it sweet
Nope, cain't afford no more fertilizer ... the crops didn't do as well last year as I'd hoped so I gott'a cut back a little THIS year .... we'll get 'er Next year, Maw
They should just nominate a yellow dog. The GOP is dead to me.
Daniel Doherty: the reason the GOP is irrelevent.
The GOPee needs to focus on the now and their governance of Congress. They way they are going will preclude there being a GOP POTUS in 2016 no matter who they run.
They have not tried that for awhile.
I voted for W and what a financial disaster he created. He didn’t flush the toilet of goldman sachs. and they reaped billions? well alot.
“SCREW THE REPUBLICANS”
Personally at this point the question is a distraction and not the one to ask.
The answer is we elect the best damn conservative candidate around. Whatever he/she is is secondary.
Ted Cruz is the only one I would consider.
A governor and a senator, in either order.
“Should Republicans Nominate a Governor or Senator in 2016?”
They know that they probably should, but they fear that it might just make the media to be harsh with them again.
Why bother, we just gave the Democrats at least nine million new votes.
Another BUMP for CRUZ.
America needs someone who has the vision for what America was and to re-implement the Constitution.
First and foremost, DEPORT all ILLEGAL ALIEN INVADERS and stop providing any taxpayer-funded benefits.
We have > 40 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIEN INVADERS and they must ALL return to their home country - either voluntary or by force.
It’s not rocket science to grasp these ILLEGAL ALIEN INVADERS represent a clear and present danger to America and our Constitution...and they are ILLEGAL.
No FTGs.
While I’m in agreement with your idea .. implementing it will be very, very difficult.
The libs will go ballistic .. and I wouldn’t even put it past them to arm the illegals.
This will be a mess for “Dreamers”; most of whom are really good kids (now in high school) who came here through no fault of their own. I do have a soft spot for them .. but .. they will need to be counseled on how their actions will get them to UN-dreamer status very quickly.
Re: Dreamers and ALL ILLEGAL ALIENS.
They need to learn America is governed by the rule of law - not feelings.
They can simply return to their home country, get in line and apply for citizenship.
Cruz has stated NO ONE residing in America can apply for citizenship.
As I stated above, Rule of Law trumps liberal feelings.
In the case of Walker and Cruz, I’ll take either.
