The article implied that despite the loss of 50% in value HP weathered the bust of the dotcom bubble. Chief executives are judged on the performance (or lack thereof) of the organizations they run.
I'm sorry, but a 50% loss of value (or rate of failure) is considered a huge black mark against any chief exec. Even if the organization survives it.
