As 2016 nears, Rubio and Cruz show interest in running for president

A fresh round of clues arrived this week from two Republican lawmakers who are regularly asked about their desire to pursue their party's nomination in 2016.

While each cited different reasons, both Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas say they're now more interested in running.

Rubio says the current Senate gridlock is limiting his ability to advocate for the kind of policies he sees as critical for moving America forward and that the White House might be a better place for that.

"I'll have to make a decision in 2016 either way, because I'm up for re-election in the Senate. And for me it's not going to be about the position, it's going to be about where can I best advocate for a 21st century reform agenda that allows us to usher in another American century," Rubio told CBS' "Face the Nation."

"The decision I have to make is can I best do that as a senator, or can I best do that as running and hopefully winning a presidency," he said....

Both have waited far too long for the 2016 race. If Cruz can run a good Reaganesque race full of optimism about a better America and leave the blood and mud alone he can position himself, along with a lot of political work, for 2020 or 2024. That is how Reagan did it. Jeb and Mitt, the pair from whom the nominee will be chosed have been running for many years and will have the Party and the Big Money solidly behind them. Of course, neither will win the presidency nor does either actually want the job. They want to bask in the glory of being the Nominee but don’t want to be President. To them that job is just a pain in the ass.

Read Ted Cruz’s biography:

Now remember, he’s only 43.

I'm thinking he would be a shoo-in for VP if he wanted it. He would be a definite asset to any presidential candidate and would be in line for president.

Cruz may have an advantage, if he gains the Majority Leader position within the Senate. This position would give him an automatic increase in face time on TV to espouse his ideas and to expose the follies of the democrats.

The old axiom is, “If you’re not already running, it’s too late.”

No Republican with any name recognition has declared for the 2016 nomination at this point.

Marco Rubio reminds me of a high school kid who started wearing a suit and tie to school after he was elected class President.

"Rubio is far and away better than Mitt Romney."

So are any 200 people picked randomly from any phone book.

Unfortunately, those 200 are not in the US Senate and potentially able to get multi-millions in financial backing.

I listened to Rubio state a number of times that he has always supported security first, and that he repudiated the gang of 8 when it became evident they weren’t living up to their word on border security first.

See: http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/06/05/Senate-aide-Rubio-trying-to-get-out-of-the-Gang-of-Eight

FWIW, I listened to him 2 weeks ago repeat the same thing. Rubio was OK with me before the gang of 8. He got in a bit over his head for a newbie Senator, and now he regrets it. I don’t like that he was snookered, but he was.

On the other hand, if we don’t start picking a few to forgive some things, we’re going to end up with zero on our side. Maybe that’s just the chaplain in me coming out, but at some point it’s counter-productive to refuse to believe that a person can make mistakes, apologize, and still be on your side.

Why would I back a Marco Rubio when I have a Ted Cruz, though?
