Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) kept the speculation about a possible brokered GOP convention alive this week when he was asked whether Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels could still become a last-minute presidential candidate.
DeMint spoke highly of Daniels when asked at a meeting of the Aiken Republican Club in Aiken, S.C., on Tuesday night.
Hes the only one who could make it happen, DeMint said, according to a report published by the Augusta Chronicle, a local paper. But I dont think his wife will let it happen.
In a Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was chosen as the favorite for the nomination among those rooting for a brokered convention, at 32 percent, followed by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin at 20 percent each, and Daniels at 15 percent.
All four have said they will not run. Daniels cited his familys reluctance in announcing he would not make a bid for the White House last year.
A brokered GOP convention would only result if no single candidate can accumulate a majority of delegates before the convention is scheduled to begin on Aug. 27 in Tampa, Fla.
Despite many experts and several high-profile Republicans including the Republican National Committees communications director, Sean Spicer dismissing the likelihood, speculation has persisted that the fluctuating popularity of many GOP candidates and unpredictable polls could lead to a prolonged primary and the necessity of a brokered convention.
DeMint speculated that only an August surprise involving the front-runner in a late-breaking scandal would trigger the hypothetical.
The popular senator told CNN earlier this month the process of choosing a nominee could very well go to the convention due to the divided delegates. On Tuesday, he said, I dont think its very likely.
A USA Today/Gallup poll released Monday found that 66 percent of Republican and GOP-leaning independents surveyed are opposed to a brokered convention.
LOL This photo says it all!
Yes! That was excellent!
DeMint has more faith in Daniels than I do . . . after watching the GOP Response to the State of the Union. Just terrible and he was very boring and painful to listen to him AND watch him. Thanks but no thanks.
Go Newt!
Personally I think Daniels would make a fine POTUS.
Mike Pence would make an even better one.
Actually, Daniels gets some charisma going when he wants/needs to.
I saw a speech he gave at CPAC last year and he was excellent.
He’s on the radio here frequently, and that’s my main experience of him. He seems like a good, straightforward guy. His unassuming personality appeals to the midwesterner in me. Maybe I shouldn’t have said “zero”, but what I meant was, when people talk rock-star candidates, they usually don’t mention Mitch.
You know, if the conservatives have an over abundance of one thing, it is leaders with charisma.
I mean, everyimte I turn on the T.V. or the radio, all I see and hear is our guys hammering away at the communist radicals taking over our country, expounding in no uncertain terms personal responsibility and individual liberty and how the massive federal leviathan must be reigned in!
I think to myself, WOW, I want that guy as president, no wait, I mean that guy! or that other gal who never misses a chance to point out how Obama is purposely driving us over the cliff!
Who are these modern day patriots and heroes you ask!?
NOBODY! NONE! NOT ONE OF THEM!
My God, the GOP sucks.
I know I'm ready for it.
Me too.
Who? Mitch “call-a-one-sided-truce-on-conservatives-values” Daniels?
Did you somehow forget Governor Sarah Palin and Speaker Newt Gingrich? They're going hammer & tongs at Mr. Obama.
Here we go again. They desperately want a RINO on the ticket, even if someone else wins the primary.
Conservatives should stay home in November if that happens.
Wait until Danials signs the “public Smoking Ban”. He will be real popular then. LOL
I kind of agree.
MilqueTOAST Daniels “is the only one who could get it done”. ROFL. The Gelding Old Party is heading for the glue factory.
No, vet, I haven’t. I haven’t really seen or heard either one of them do much of anything here lately -_-
Maybe it’s because I quit watching fox news in 2008, but I listen to Beck, Rush, Hannity, and Levin 5 days a week + also read FR every day, and I can’t think of anything that stands out.
But I will concede your point for the sake of discussing. Are those two people the only two we have? Considering the federal government that we have, I would expect every single elected member of our party to be absolutely outraged at the power grabs and blatant taking of our freedom by communists, and they aren’t saying diddly squat :(
Too much Jack Daniels can make it happen that someone thinks that Mitch Daniels can make it happen.
I think Daniel’s drug dealing arrest will be enough to keep him out for good. The way the media and the Dems have been going, having a parking ticket 5 years ago just demolishes a Republican (except Romney).
It also didn’t help that he sold off his toll road to foreign company, and gave it monopoly protection against competition...and the ability to raise tolls without limit. Not too bright...but maybe the first paragraph gives a clue as to his lack of common sense.
