Perry hits Gingrich and Romney on health-care mandates in TV ad (video)

Rachel Weiner

December 8, 2011

While former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney take aim at each other, Texas Gov. Rick Perry is hoping to get in on the action with an ad that targets both rivals for supporting individual health-care mandates.

Trying to claw his way back into the top-tier of the GOP presidential race with only three weeeks to the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, Perry ties his rivals to President Obama in the new ad and “the big government liberals.”

“We dont want government-mandated health-care,” the narrator said. ”Yet, Newt Gingrich supports it, and Mitt Romney, he put it into law in Massachusetts.”

The ad ends with President Obama signing his health-care law and concludes with Perry saying, “I won’t let the big government liberals ruin this country.”

Still clueless on the Gardasil thing aren’t you. Unfortunately, some folks just NEVER learn or understand the truth. Enjoy your time with the uninformed.

Opt-out provisions were inconvenient truths that the shouters ignored. We’ll never how many little girls later contract cervical cancer because of the cowardice of the state legislature.

I support a Newt/Perry ticket, so I noticed that Perry only barely mentioned Newt in the ad.

Gingrich’s notion of mandate was much different than that of either Romneycare or Obamacare. I’ve read his comments and it has to do with individuals who intend to use hospitals having the means to pay for them before they enter that hospital. They must have insurance or they must post a bond. That is a mandate, but I also fail to see how it is the same as a huge government program like RomneyCare that has a government health provider if you don’t have one. That leads simply to a single payer system over time.

As a conservative, I believe that each person SHOULD have to pay their own bill and not stiff the hospital which then has to raise the costs of everyone else to cover for the deadbeats who stiff them.

I would support Gingrich’s idea, which Gingrich now says won’t work, IF a person could sign an affidavit strictly forbidding anyone for any reason from ever taking him/her to a hospital/doctor/clinic if that person did not have insurance or a posted bond.

That way they have an opt-out.

Now, Gingrich’s original plan also had a voucher based on means testing of poor people to assist in paying for their health care. That is an extension of welfare benefits, so that would require the nation first go to a workfare plan for welfare before I could support that. I already don’t support welfare for the reason that it robs initiative from our people.

Of course, the severely disabled and handicapped would always be an exception.

The presidential debates will be an hour long and only two are planned.

I’m not basing my vote for a four year presidency on two hour-long debates.

I really don’t understand why Bachmann is not doing better, she’s very conservative and upright. Yet everyone still goes for the dog and pony shows, such is life ...

I’ll make you a wager Jim. I believe that in the next 6 weeks that Newts true colors will become vividly apparent to the Conserves.
Perry is the only TRUE Conservaive in this race.
My wager is that Perry will come in 1st or 2nd in Iowa.
If he doesn’t I will make a $100 DONATION TO fr.

I have faith in the American People even after everything that has happened the last 3 years.

IMO, any Tea Partier who supports Romney is drinking something else with (or in place of) their tea.

Nobody forced anybody to do anything, so your premise is faulty. Otherwise, no, because a health care mandate doesn’t have an option not to take it, like vaccines do.

the opt out was only for students in public school. Students in Private schools didn’t have an option. he used an executive order to mandate a healthcare decision so it was government mandated healthcare. Newt has shown time and time again that he is infinitely more intelligent and more qualified than Rick Perry. Insulting me only illustrates how desperate your camp has become in the full light of this reality. I voted for Perry once btw. I wasn’t impressed.

“I noticed that Perry only barely mentioned Newt in the ad.”

LOL, he only called Newt a big government liberal and said Newt = Romney = Obama.

This is the first thing Perry has done right in the entire campaign. I hope he runs this ad nationwide.

Then Perry should endorse Michele Bachmann and drop out of the race.

The conservatives and tea party people have been pretty fickle, every month they give a majority support to a different candidate. Newt is like the 4th candidate (if you count Michelle) to receive significant support; it remains to be seen if he loses that support as quickly as Bachmann, Perry, and Cain did.

Nor do I. I like her. She’s my second choice after Palin. But this race is boiling down to Newt vs Romney. Newt is leading in 3 of the 4 early primary states and crushing Romney in Florida and Georgia. With Palin and Cain out and the rest all but out, I’m looking to defeat Romney. Newt is a notorious lib thumper and he’ll thump the hell out of libs Romney and Obama!!

Between Newt and Romney it’s a no-brainer. Go NEWT!!
