Mitt Romney has a growing lead in the race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, and almost half of the party's voters expect him to be the nominee, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.
Twenty-eight percent of Republicans backed the former Massachusetts governor, giving him a lead of 8 percentage points over his nearest challenger Herman Cain in the poll, taken November 10-11.
Romney was 5 percentage points ahead in a survey November 7-8.
Newt Gingrich, the U.S. House of Representatives speaker in the mid-1990s, solidified a recent rise among conservatives seeking an alternative to the more moderate Romney, coming in third place in the current poll with 16 percent.
Gingrich, who is seen as having performed well in recent debates, was viewed as the second-most "presidential" of the Republican hopefuls, according to the poll.
Whether or not they support him, almost half of the Republicans surveyed expect Romney to become the nominee to oppose President Barack Obama, a Democrat, in the November 2012 election.
Romney, who also ran for president in 2008, has been in first or second place in polls for months and enjoys by far the most campaign funds of the Republican field.
But some in his party see him as too liberal, and he has so far failed to significantly boost his level of support in polls. The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll, however, shows he is benefiting from missteps by his rivals.
"As the other candidates falter, his image comes into relief," Ipsos pollster Cliff Young said....

Romney should never be the GOP Nom. If by some bizarre twist he is, I (and Millions) will not vote for him. Get lost, Romney (and all his loony supporters). And take Huntsman with ya. Thanks man.
Mitt has been running for 5 years and has only convinced about 25% of his own party to support him. How is it that people think he the guy who has the best shot at beating Obama?
Trying to figure this out. Are you saying you think that FR is a pro Romney site?

Cain will hang “Romneycare/Obamacare around Romney’s throat, and then.....goodbye Romney : )
Not intentionally. It just seems that every time some MSM Lib posts anything about Perry/Cain/Newt, the kneejerk hitpieces start showing up. While most will say they don't want Romney, it's a minority of initial posts that start out anti-Romney - he seems to be an afterthought.
When I see Freepers sputing MS crud about the other candidates, especially when the claims are either inaccurate or even made up, it scares the bejeezus out of me. If FR folks (many of whom I have admired over the last 9 years, jump to trash those that give us the best chance of restoring some sanity, it appears that Romney will the most unscathed, both by us and the MSM until it's too late to even settle for him in the General Election.
While we all have our pet peeves, we needn't get so rabid that we get blind to the big picture and what's at stake.
FR is not a pro Romney site even by default.
The purpose of the primary is to hash out all these issues.
This woman (me) will not vote or Romney, he is no different politically that BHO. In my opinion, that is how most FR posters feel.
Even now ~ months later than this thread ~ we still have a majority of Freepers who do more than express misgivings about Romney ~ many continue to object strenuously to the idea of giving over the Republican Party to the Abomination of Desolation that the RINOs and Leftwingtards represent.
The dude is not the nominee today and we still have some time for almost magical (but wholly predictable) events to transpire that will FORCE the GOP-e out of the party and give rise to a renaissance of Conservatism.
Even MItt is smart enough to know he can't win ~ the hurdle he has to overcome ~ declining Republican Presidential voters and a 10 million vote margin for Obama~ we need a real Republican in this race ~ not a pale imitation of a Democrat.
ONLY 3 of them had been lifelong Conservative Republicans!
So, yeah, there were 13 RINOS and other infiltrators ~ even out and out Democrat politicians ~ who ran in the Republican primaries for the purpose of clearing the field of Conservatives and ushering MItt, the 20% candidate, in at the top of the list.
He still only commands 20% of the Republican vote ~ he's a loser.
We need a dyed-in-the-wool Conservative. Unfortunately, it ain't gonna happen for at least another 4 years. Until them, the "pale imitation" is all we have to try to stanch the bleeding.
