Mitt Romney whacks Rick Perry over immigration
The Miami Herald ^ | September 2, 2011 | Adam C. Smith

With Rick Perry proving to be a serious threat to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, the former Massachusetts governor swung through Tampa Friday to exploit what some Republican see as Perry’s Achilles heal: immigration.

"We must stop providing the incentives that promote illegal immigration,’’ Romney told more than 100 people attending a Republican Hispanic conference in Tampa. " As governor, I vetoed legislation that would have provided in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants and I strengthened the authority our state troopers had to enforce existing immigration laws."

Romney, 64, never mentioned by name the Texas governor, who leads Romney in most national polls as well as in early primary and caucus state. But immigration is a new issue of focus for Romney in this campaign cycle, and his campaign knows that Perry, 61, is already facing criticism from conservatives for not taking a hard enough line on illegal immigration.

Perry, for instance, in 2001 signed a Texas version of the "Dream Act" that made Texas the first state to allow in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants - much like the bill Romney boasted of killing in Massachusetts.

Illegal immigration remains a hot button issues among Republican activists, though leaders in Texas - where 38 percent of the population is Hispanic - have tended to take a more moderate approach to the issue. Perry, for instance, said last year he had no interest in passing a tough Arizona-style immigration law for his border state.....

"Legal residents"? Hardly. They are "illegal non-residents". Making them eligible for instate tuition does not turn them into "legal residents".

Folks who are bi-lingual have got to be careful to not get tripped up over the double-negatives. They are structured differently in English than in Spanish, and don't always mean "Yes" ~ used more traditionally in English they mean "No".

The rest of the country pretty much thinks your arguments to pay off the illegals are naive. We don't believe them. Why should they?

You do realize, don't you, that OBAMA has never, ever gotten a chance to be involved in a successfully passed in-state tuition tricks.

Perry's position is hanging out there like ripe fruit to be plucked by Obama. All he has to do is say "I've reconsidered everything, and we can't afford to take the risk that all foreign students would be entitled to instate tuition while American students aren't.

Then it's all over.

He may well click that one off next Wednesday.

“All Perry did was allow children of illegals, who were legal residents of Texas to take advantage of the same instate tuition rates that Texas residents get.

They still pay out of their own pockets.”

Are these kids illegal or U.S. citizens?

Funny thing is that I’m not a Palin supporter but don’t see her as a member of team RINO and would be happy to see her jump into this race even if it harms my candidate.

Anything to take down the silken haired RINO twins.

Mexico has some excellent medical facilities on the border. They are mostly staffed by US board certified doctors who got tired of the bureaucratic red tape here. Someone on another board said the insurance was so that people could go to Mexico for much cheaper healthcare and be covered and vice verse. Remember, insurance isn’t free. People pay for it. In fact I did a search and see it is offered in San Diego.

As far as I’m concerned, Perry and Romney are working together and putting on an act.

Ray Sullivan works for Perry and his wife Leslie Sullivan is working for Romney.

HUH? I don't whether to laugh, cry or throw up!

"There is no such thing as Perrycare."

"Perrycare" is little more than a scheme to have US insurance companies pay for Mexican illegals' medical expenses in the US and Mexico too.

Silly rabbit:)

Please, take a look at the proposal. I'd send you a link but I'm lazy.

It's the proposal from the two legislators from the "border districts".

Sure, it says illegals can use their Mexican insurance in the US...but, get this: They don't have any there. It would have caused the State of Texas (and the feds) to ship MediCaid (or private insurance)dollars to Mexico.

Ray Sullivan is Perry’s former chief of staff / current communications director and Leslie Sullivan is Mitt’s chief Texas fundraiser.

Until we can remove the laws that allow anchor babies, it behooves us to get these kids an education lest we find ourselves swimming in a sea of uneducated people on the dole.

Perry is working in the bounds of reality with what he has available for tools.

I'll see if I can get the inlaws to stand guard night and day filming the comings and goings.

Shouldn't be difficult at all.

This is the kind of garbage that goes on. Dems worked for McCain and we know how that worked out. They all work together. With little differentiation between them. And we are the pawns.

Psssst, they have it in San Diego! It’s not welfare but a fricking insurance policy that allows people who live on the border to get the best medical care they can utilizing the resources in their area. Believe it or not, there are some really good private hospitals on the border that cater to US citizens for a fraction of the cost.

Remember, your favorite utilized medical care in Canada because that was the best care in the area.

"38% of the population of Texas is hispanic."

What does that have to do with anything?

If these kids are illegal, what programs do they qualify for other than free K-12 education? Are there welfare programs funded in-state in Texas? They shouldn’t qualify for any federal programs.
