Mitt Romney whacks Rick Perry over immigration
The Miami Herald ^ | September 2, 2011 | Adam C. Smith

With Rick Perry proving to be a serious threat to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, the former Massachusetts governor swung through Tampa Friday to exploit what some Republican see as Perry’s Achilles heal: immigration.

"We must stop providing the incentives that promote illegal immigration,’’ Romney told more than 100 people attending a Republican Hispanic conference in Tampa. " As governor, I vetoed legislation that would have provided in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants and I strengthened the authority our state troopers had to enforce existing immigration laws."

Romney, 64, never mentioned by name the Texas governor, who leads Romney in most national polls as well as in early primary and caucus state. But immigration is a new issue of focus for Romney in this campaign cycle, and his campaign knows that Perry, 61, is already facing criticism from conservatives for not taking a hard enough line on illegal immigration.

Perry, for instance, in 2001 signed a Texas version of the "Dream Act" that made Texas the first state to allow in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants - much like the bill Romney boasted of killing in Massachusetts.

Illegal immigration remains a hot button issues among Republican activists, though leaders in Texas - where 38 percent of the population is Hispanic - have tended to take a more moderate approach to the issue. Perry, for instance, said last year he had no interest in passing a tough Arizona-style immigration law for his border state.....

And they have to PAY for college albeit at the instate rate.
My own Son doesn’t qualify for the in state rate as he is not a resident.

Still, it is 1% of illegals partaking of the DREAM act in 10 years and they pay out of their own pocket.

I hardly find this an issue.

It's a lot HARDER to act tough in Assachusetts when the legislature is 85% liberal.

And the present Massachusetts governor (Patrick?) is one of the biggest pandering non-enforcers in the nation. He won't even participate in federal programs designed to find criminal aliens and several sheriffs in the state are defying him however they can.

What I am saying is that here in Texas, the vast majority of Hispanics are hard working people, and that Texas is not a promoter of getting on the dole for free.

We get along alright down here.
We have to. We are neighbors.

Perry is NOT a guy that intends for the US taxpayer to give Mexico a blank check.

Bwhahahaha!!! He's just a guy that wants to give illegal immigrants a open borders work permit policy, access to taxpayer funded college scholarships, and bi-national healthcare!

perrybots are the biggest liars around.

The Simpson-Mazzoli amnesty of 2006 was sold to Reagan and the nation as a one-time amnesty that would clean up the problem and be followed by strict enforcement to prevent a recurrence.

Of course that should be 1986, not 2006.

For the Americans who live on the border, those with familiy ties on both sides and the “snow birds and seniors who enjoy the warmer weather and cheaper cost of living, the insurance would have been great.

Free-market solutions to a problem are good.

The drug cartels have pretty much killed the trips across the border to visit or shop.

The fence is not the best way to control 1200 milesbof a winding river — especially in the rural farm and ranches. Besides: The land is privately owned on the US side and none of us want the government commandeering our land.

Houses are cut off from the rest of the US, and cattle can’t get to the water or farmers lost their ability to irrigate.

And then, there are these big gaps every so often, with open gates or no gates. Also, the fence is only 10- 12 feet high. Trucks with ladders negate the usefulness.

What is needed are more border patrol personnel, more planes flying over and a stricter policy on meeting violence with the force of a nation that intends to protect its borders.

But, like the poorly designed, spit-and-a-promise fence, the feds and the federal courts prevent local law enforcement from taking up the slack. School districts are forbidden from even identifying the children of illegals in schools. We’ve managed to hold off on Medicaid for illegals, but our ERs pay the price, literally. And now, Obama’s administration has announced they don’t intend to require proof of citizenship for the “public option” of Obamacare.

Article 3, Section 1 doesn’t say that the judges get lifetime appointments - it leaves the length of terms wide open, easily set “ as Congress shall ordain.”

Why would you want to continue the status quo?

That had nothing to do with illegals. We don’t give Medicaid or CHIPS to illegals. If only we could get the feds to deport illegals, we’d save tons in unfunded-EMTALA-mandated hospital costs.

We’re also forced and bribed by the feds to fund more and more Medicaid and CHIPS. The feds take Texas income tax and won’t give it back unless we play their way.

The Governor has encouraged holding the line on Medicaid and CHIPS at the point where it would force an income tax. It doesn’t hurt that our Constitution forbids an income tax. But William Wayne Justice did his Federal Court best to change that.

Perry likes the flat tax and/or getting rid of the income tax and going to a sales tax. He suggests repealing the 16th amendment and going back to State controlled spending except for very narrow Constitutional duties. There’s a whole chapter in his book on the 16th, 17th amendments and the New Deal.

Nice Post thanks, We have the military all that is needed, The "Right" CIC and the control of both ends in the house ...

And that's the problem with the troops on the border charades. The right CIC might someday secure the border with a sufficient number of troops. But if that should ever happen, as soon as the wrong CIC succeeds the right one, the wrong one can remove the troops and return the border to a highly uncontrolled condition.

The only long-term solution is double fencing everywhere it's needed and adequate BP patrolling 24/7/365. And securing our border, a matter of national security more than ever, is vastly more important than water for any ranch on the border.

It's the US-Mexico border, not the Texas-Mexico border. Until that is accepted and established, there will be continuous illegal entries, drug smuggling and other crime on the border.

Double fencing? I suppose you mean in the river or eminent domain taking of all that farm and ranch land.

What’s to keep the next CIC from tearing down that wall? (that sounds familiar)

Our Nation is built on inalienable rights that are endowed to individuals, not the government.taking all that land and destroying the rightful and productive use of private property is not American.

Increase air surveillance and increase border patrol personnel, but don’t destroy our citizen’s liberty for a semblance of security. (that sounds familiar, too.)

Perry’s got an easy answer; American students have much more lenient rules to qualify for instate tuition. And it would be much better if we kept the children of illegals out and deported them with their families long before the attend the last three years and graduate from a Texas high school.
We should get the feds on the border and out of our schools and hospitals.
