The race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination starts in earnest this week at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.
Too early, you say? On the contrary. With the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary only 12 months away, it may soon be too late for anyone who wants to run for president to begin the hard work of raising money, recruiting a staff and wooing Republican activists.
So let's get started. Here's the conventional wisdom, fresh from the corridors of power, on the state of the Republican race:
There are really only two spots on the GOP ballot. One is reserved for Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who won nine primaries in 2008. The other is for someone who isn't Mitt Romney someone like Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee or Tim Pawlenty.
Romney has been running for the nomination the old-fashioned way. He has raised more money than any other hopeful ($6.3 million for his political action committee during the last two years). He spent most of last year collecting IOUs as he helped Republican candidates across the country win House and Senate seats. He's the solid front-runner in polls in New Hampshire, the first primary election state.
If the Republican Party worked the way it used to, Romney already would be the presumptive nominee....

Willard is a fraud.
He doesn’t deserve ANY office.
And his supporters here can all go pound salt.
Another attempt to force Romney on us. When does it end? I guess after he gets nominated and defeated.
Not going to happen....
He ran very hard the last time, with a good deal of help from the press, and he was never able to get any higher than 21% in the polls, even while he was leading.
Why would he do any better this time, after losing so dismally last time?
Why does that pile of crap get one of the spots?
If he won the nomination I wouldn’t vote for him in the general!
Romney is the establishment darling, and we don’t need the establishment or another darling.
I hope Paul Ryan runs for Vice-President, now that would be adding insult to injury! Paul Ryan will give us Wisconsin (aside from Speaker Boehner giving us Ohio) and Paul Ryan is well respected from all Conservatives!
It’s great he’s raised all of that money. Now he can use it to support the Republican candidate. Maybe he’s found his true calling — raising money for the Republican party. He can hit up a lot of those wealthy Mormons.
It’s already starting here. The straw poll is only 6 months away.
Trying to get our state (SC) to close our primary so the Democrats won't vote for him.
I wish you could guarantee that. I’m not convinced that we won’t be railroaded....again.
How much is Romnet paying people to tell us we want him to run?
Lets all send personal notes and emails telling that loser to give it up
Eff the nose dive rinos!
Palin or bust!
Mitt will make a spiffy-looking Vice President.
This is a scam to get obama reelected?
“Here’s the conventional wisdom...”
Yeah, right.
Looks like the MSM is attempting to foist another weak, incompetent, RINO upon the Republican ticket for 2012. The title actually made me want to vomit: “one of them is reserved for Romney”?!? Romney will not even be in the running half-way through primary season - we just cannot afford to let it happen.
