Alvin Greene voter says it was the name that swayed her

Beaufort -- He grabbed well over 50 percent of the democratic votes statewide in his run for US Senate. Same story in Beaufort County. But now, many who voted for Alvin Greene either won't admit it or now say they're ashamed.

Here’s another twist to the blame game of how this whole thing happened.

"I voted for him because his name sounded like the singer and I'd never heard of Vic Rawl,” Gail Westerfield of Beaufort said. "I didn't have name recognition-- so I went with the person who had the most...famous name. It's so bad."

Could it be that a man behind gospel and soul helped Alvin Greene -- a man with little to no campaign -- become South Carolina's Democratic candidate for US Senate?

An ashamed Gail Westerfield says that's what it boiled down to when before her were two names she'd never seen before.

"I had just never heard of either of these guys and it never occurred to me that anything like this could happen or my vote and that this other person I was with who shall go nameless that our votes would contribute to South Carolina being the butt of a joke again. I mean, I feel terrible about it,” she said.

Since Greene's victory we've learned much, much more -- that many wish they'd known before.

The unemployed veteran is facing a felony obscenity charge. His mental stability has been questioned by political leaders, and the Democratic Party is asking that he withdraw. But Greene says he's not going anywhere, leaving Gail humiliated she had something to do with it all.

"I mean, we're rivaling Florida now for the ridiculousness. I don't feel good about being a part of that,” she said.

Gail says she's not trying to justify her bad decision but she does wish that the Democratic Party would have put as much vigor in informing voters about the candidates as they have in the post-game of the primary.

They knew next to nothing about Mr. Obama and yet they voted for him. How is this different? At least Mr. Greene served his country for 13 years!

It worked for Barry Sotero, too.

Most Democrats voted for Obama because it reminded them of Osama.

There was a time when I felt self conscious when I said you had to be stupid as a rock to vote democrat, but that was a long time ago.

Yep. Alvin is far more worthy of high office than Zero.

Alvin Greene or Barack Hussein Obama?

Alvin Greene sounds like a typical Joe Average American name.

Barack Hussein Obama OTOH sounds like some guy who should be living in a cave in Northern Afghanistan...

I worked a greeter (basically part screener part crowd control) at the Polls in 2008.

While doing this job I had a bit of time to talk to quite a few of the voters.

This opportunity basically thoroughly reinforced the impression I have had for most of my adult life.

That impression is that a large percentage of the US population has no business voting for the leadership of the most powerful nation in the world.

In 2008 the first time voters that I talked to seemed to be voting on nothing more than the feelings they got from a few sound bites.

As party member I was of course not permitted to express any of my personal preferences for any candidate so all of the talking we did was pretty much one sided. They never knew which party I belonged to.

I was thinking that Barry Sotero, if listed on the ballot, would not have had the cache in the eyes of race hustlers that “Barack Obama” seems to have had.

He was at the top of the ballot, and many thought it was the singer, Al Greene who was the candidate.

This has happened before. Bad news for them, but nothing illegal.

Nitwits! They voted for an album cover and got a perv instead!

Well, tough. No do-overs! Elections have consequences! Alvin's the Won!

I know. The only reason she feels bad is because she has no brain of her own, and other people have TOLD her to feel bad. If they told her Obama was clueless, she’d feel bad about voting for him as well, and if they told her Greene was a good candidate, she’d be happy with her choice.

If I don’t know anything about the candidates, I don’t vote for either. People need to stop wasting their votes and either become informed or stay home.

If I lived in SC I'd vote for him in November. As far as I'm concerned all incumbents have to go and this guy seems just as capable as the folks in Washington now..

Amen to that! I almost always leave part of my ballot blank because I don't know enough about every single race to form an opinion. I bet there are millions of Americans out there who think it's their civic duty to vote on every race that's on the ballot. Campaigns like ROCK THE VOTE do far more damage than good. We seriously need to add a "NO OPINION" option to every single race on the ballot, so people can choose that when they don't have a clue about the people running in a particular race.

She thinks the party is responsible for informing her about the candidates.

Yep, she’s a democrat.

I once watched a news segment out of Green Bay, Wisconsin. They were voting on a referendum regarding renovating Lambeau Field. The news station showed the lines at the polls, and they were very impressive. People waiting in long lines to vote.

The reporter interviewed quite a few people on who they were voting for in the major races (mayor, council, state rep, etc.) 90% of the people, that they interviewed, had NO IDEA what else was on the ballot, yet you can bet that at least 80% of those people still voted for someone!

It reinforced my opinion that stupid people (or Packer fans) probably should not vote!

That's the job of the candidates, not the party. Much of the "blame" here should go to Rawl, who thought he he cruise to an easy primary win and didn't actually campaign. And the voters, of course, for not doing any homework.

Thank you! That is exactly right; perhaps this sorry little episode can be turned into an object-lesson about how lethally dangerous uninformed voting can be. Forget about licensing firearms, we need to be licensing voting-arms (and, more to the point, the mind - or lack thereof - behind each one).

Funny how uninformed republican/conservative voters merely end up electing RINOs, but uninformed democrat/liberal voters end up electing felons - both indicted (in this instance) and unindicted (in the case of the Whitehouse).
