For President: None of the Above!

It's probably no secret to anyone who reads my column regularly that I will not be voting for either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton for president.

But I also will not be voting for John McCain.

I could tell you all the reasons and have expressed them already in a number of columns in recent months. But this time, I'll let someone with whom I seldom agree express them for me.

His name is Jonathan Chait, a senior editor at The New Republic. Here's what he wrote in that magazine:

"Even though it is in the public record, McCain's voting behavior during Bush's first term is almost never mentioned in the press anymore. Yet McCain's secret history is simply astonishing. It is no exaggeration to say that, during this crucial period, McCain was the most effective advocate of the Democratic agenda in Washington.

And why did you join in? I see logic is not one of your strengths, however I’m sure you have very powerful emotions.

Sadly I feel the facts will mean nothing to the Alinskys on this thread. Thanks again.

Is that a reference to those who misrepresent things like McCain's ACU rating? LOL

Your little character assassination game is pretty old and very childish.

You're right. It was 65 in 2006.

McCain raised his current year ACU rating (2007) up to a whopping 80. (Just published)

Of course, he didn’t vote on 60% of those votes the ACU found of highest priority.

Had he voted on those bills consistent with his past stances on issues, he’d look just as lackluster as ever.

In these times as a conservative you vote for what is best for your country. That is your duty.

Is it your position that I should vote for a traitor and a betrayer? For one who is ignoble and dishonorable, just because he has a big (R)? One who is a socialist, who has doe more damage to our Bill of Rights than anyone else in my lifetime?

What the hell kind of Conservative would do that? Conservatives are noted for voting their conscience. Conservatives are noted for standing, unwavering, for their principles. It has always been so, and always will be so, because that is what Conservatives DO. They conserve.

That being said, you are correct- We do live in dangerous times. That is why I am against McCain, and against Bush, and all the other Globalist/Socialist traitors who undermine our very sovereignty even as you try and pump their crap at me and tell me it's ice cream.

I’d rather have a patriot like McCain in office than either of the two anti-military, coward liberals

Patriot my a$$.

I joined in the discussion because this is a discussion forum.

Unique concept, huh?

Apparently you have no interest in other opinions and just prefer to label others or to launch personal insults. Why ask if all you are going to do is dismiss those who you disagree with?

Votes tallied by ACU for ratings below. McCain had 8 good votes out of the 10 he showed up for, so they gave him an "80." He seems to be a master of ducking the most controversial, missing 15 votes (60%).
1 + Good Earmark Disclosure
2 + Good Regulation of Grassroots Lobbying
3 X No Vote Iraq War—Cloture
4 + Good Tax Cuts
5 + Good Alternative Minimum Tax
6 + Good Estate (“Death”) Tax Repeal
7 - BAD Stem Cell Research
8 X No Vote Small Business Regulation
9 - BAD Immigration Overhaul—Cloture
10 X No Vote Coastal Drilling for Natural Gas
11 X No Vote Energy Policy
12 + Good Employee Rights—Cloture
13 + Good Social Security Benefits for Illegal Aliens
14 X No Vote New Student Loan Program
15 X No Vote U.N. Peacekeeping Operations
16 X No Vote Abortion and Sterilization
17 X No Vote “Mexico City” Policy
18 X No Vote Davis-Bacon Requirement
19 + Good District of Columbia Congressional Seat—Cloture
20 X No Vote Hate Crimes—Cloture
21 X No Vote Health Insurance Expansion
22 X No Vote Energy Policy—Cloture
23 X No Vote Eminent Domain
24 X No Vote Energy Policy
25 X No Vote Alternative Minimum Tax Adjustment

Ah, he’s using the Obama method of improving his voting record.

It is pretty easy to get an 80 in 2008 when one is only there for 9 of 25 votes:

[+] 01. Earmark Disclosure S1 (Roll Call 5).
[+] 02. Regulation of Grassroots Lobbying S 1 (Roll Call 17).
[X] 03. Iraq War—Cloture S 574 (Roll Call 51).
[+] 04. Tax Cuts SConRes 21 (Roll Call 107).
[+] 05. Alternative Minimum Tax SConRes 21 (Roll Call 108).
[+] 06. Estate (“Death”) Tax Repeal SConRes 21 (Roll Call 109).
[-] 07. Stem Cell Research S5 (Roll Call 127).
[X] 08. Small Business Regulation S 761 (Roll Call 139).
[-] 09. Immigration Overhaul—Cloture S 1348 (Roll Call 206).
[X] 10. Coastal Drilling for Natural Gas HR 6 (Roll Call 212).
[X] 11. Energy Policy HR 6 (Roll Call 226).
[+] 12. Employee Rights—Cloture HR 800 (Roll Call 227).
[+] 13. Social Security Benefits for Illegal Aliens HR 2669 (Roll Call 263).
[X] 14. New Student Loan Program S 1642 (Roll Call 273).
[X] 15. U.N. Peacekeeping Operations HR 2764 (Roll Call 317).
[X] 16. Abortion and Sterilization HR 2764 (Roll Call 318).
[X] 17. “Mexico City” Policy HR 2764 (Roll Call 319).
[X] 18. Davis-Bacon Requirement HR 3074 (Roll Call 334).
[+] 19. District of Columbia Congressional Seat—Cloture S 1257 (Roll Call 339).
[X] 20. Hate Crimes—Cloture HR 1585 (Roll Call 350).
[X] 21. Health Insurance Expansion HR 976 (Roll Call 353).
[X] 22. Energy Policy—Cloture HR 6 (Roll Call 425).
[X] 23. Eminent Domain HR 2419 (Roll Call 429).
[X] 24. Energy Policy HR 6 (Roll Call 430).
[X] 25. Alternative Minimum Tax Adjustment HR 2764 (Roll Call 440). ACU: 2007 US Senate Votes

Of the 9 votes he made, he voted sideways on two. And look at the two he was bad on:

[-] 07. Stem Cell Research S5 (Roll Call 127).
[-] 09. Immigration Overhaul—Cloture S 1348 (Roll Call 206).

If one counts his missed votes against him, He voted ACU Conservative only 7 of 25 times.
That would be a rating of only 28%.

Here's his bad votes in 2006:

[-] 04. Tax Cut Rules S Con Res 83 (Roll Call 38)
[-] 12. Immigration Overhaul—Social Security Credit S 2611 (Roll Call 130)
[-] 14. Immigration Reform S 2611 (Roll Call 157)
[-] 15. Same-Sex Marriage Ban Constitutional Amendment S J Res. 1 (Roll Call 163)
[-] 17. Native Hawaiian Government S 147 (Roll Call 165)
[-] 18. Iran Sanctions S 2766 (Roll Call 172)
[-] 22. Border Fencing HR 5441 (Roll Call 200)
[-] 23. Embryonic Stem Cell Research HR 810 (Roll Call 206)

ACU: Ratings Archive 2006

Then lets look at his bad votes in 2005:

[-] 02. Tax Cuts -- Fiscal 2006 Budget Resolution. S Con Res 18 (Roll Call 59)
[-] 08. Climate Change -- Energy Policy. HR 6 (Roll Call 148)
[-] 13. Mercury Emissions Rule -- Passage. S J Res 20 (Roll Call 225)
[-] 17. ANWR Oil and Gas Leasing -- Budget Reconciliation. S 1932 (Roll Call 288)
[-] 20. Tax Increases on Oil and Gas Development -- Tax Relief Act of 2005. S 2020 (Roll Call 332)
