Will Cheney stay on as VP?

Posted on 07/06/2004 7:41:50 AM PDT by youngrepublican1986

With Kerry picking Edwards as his VP, do people think Bush is going to keep Cheney on as his VP? I mean, I really like Cheney but he is getting older, his health is a concern, and a lot of "moderates" may not have a favorable opinion of him, especially after the F-bomb incident. In addition, I don't think he would look very good in the VP debate next to John Edwards, who unfortunately is quite charasmatic. If Cheney is dropped from the ticket, who would replace him? Giuliani? What about John McCain, would he consider being W's VP even after their battle for the GOP nomination in 2000? I'd personally love to see McCain on the ticket, as he could appeal to the more moderate voters and be advertised as a REAL war hero. Thoughts?

Since the democrats are urging Cheney to resign, they are obviously afraid of him. Thankfully, Bush has repeatedly said that Cheney will stay on.

It is important that the Prez be seen as reliable, loyal and smart in keeping a VP who has both executive as well as foreign policy experience. Those two characteristics, Edwards does not have. Edwards is a trial lawyer and would have lost his NC state before he chickened out not to run again. At least Edwards did not run for both offices as Kerry is doing. Edwards has voted against all tort reform. A debate may give Silky Boy a female charge, but if listened to, Cheney will crush him with facts, humor and experience. If Cheney decides to quit, then a Rudy or someone else ( not McCain-because AZ has a Dem gov./ and would appoint a Dem. thus losing a GOP seat)like Bill Frist.

I agree - Cheney will crush John # 2 in any face to face debates.

McCain would only be VP if he were assured that he'd be a powerful one. He's said he has plenty of power now and would only be VP if he didn't lose any of it.

Oh, and the time to have done the Bush-McCain ticket would have been 4 years ago.

Janet would do that if she wanted to slice her own political neck. McCain is a political force in Arizona. He could crush her with tweezers if she picked someone he didn't approve of. Same story in Massachusetts. Romney, even without the legislation that will soon be law over his veto, would pick a Dem.

fret not. the contrast between experience and inexeperience will be completely obvious between johnny boy and vice president chaney...the question we as a nation have to answer is whether we want good hair and charisma over experience and conviction. i think in the end edwards, like kerry, only looks the part and the american people understand that in a time of war, appearance is not enough.

The people who support Kerry don't care about whether the Veep candidate can handle national defense. By supporting Kerry, they're already discounting the issue's importance even in a presidential candidate.

You have to be a DLC "intellectual" to think that Kerry would be more effective, or even as effective, in the war on terror as Bush is.

Edwards is not the name of the game here. Kerry is. If we destroy him as a candidate, Edwards won't save him. If Kerry remains a viable candidate, he'll win, no matter what voters might think of the Breck Girl.

How many of you saw the O'Rielly Factor this evening? Lani Davis and Marsh were allowed to spin the democratic mantra of "the President made hundreds of mistakes...." and on and on in that vein. I am so sorry to see Fox employ those two as they can never be fair or balanced. I e-mailed the show my disgust for such blatant one sidedness. What's O'Reilly's agenda?

About Dick Cheney --

Not a great campaigner. Perhaps even a lousy campaigner.
Boring speaker. Has no identifiable constituency. Does not help the ticket.

However, I don't believe he hurts the ticket either. The kind of people who hate him are partisan Democrats and/or the dupes of partisan Democrats. He shores up Bush's semi-conservative credentials, is very dignified, is quite knowledgeable, and has no ambitions for higher office. He's also extremely experienced in Washington.

Most important: If Bush dumped him, or if he quit voluntarily (which would be seen and interpreted as the same thing), it would make the administration look guilty of something and it would convey a message of weakness to the Democrats and to our enemies.

As for the debates: Cheney is among the smartest people in public life, at least on our side. He will at least match, and probably beat, Edwards on substance. On style, he will appeal to people who should vote Republican and Edwards will appeal to people who should vote Democratic. The dimwitted "independents" who decide at the last minute, the soccer moms, etc., won't watch the debate or probably even see the "coverage" of it.

In short: Not to worry. About Cheney, anyway.

I don't think Dems are scared of Cheney. In fact, over at dKos, they are plotting how to keep him on the ticket. The article "How to keep Cheney on the ticket" argues that having Kerry demand Cheney step down would do the trick and make it impossible to have him leave without it looking like caving to the Dems. I am a big fan of the "health problems" switcheroo. McCain would be my top choice, but there are many good choices (Rice, Powell, Guiliani, J.C. Watts). I'm not sure I want the President choosing his own successor for '08, but if he choose well it could be a good thing. If McCain and him could overcome their differences, it would tip quite a few moderates and independents and might lead to a stinging landslide. The others would help in certain regions or demographics, but would not fundamentally change the race.

An incumbent Veep cannot win the White House for us in 2008. We will need to run someone who had to FIGHT for the nomination, because '08 will be a very difficult year with a very difficult opponent, assuming it's not JFK running for re-election. Keep Dick.

McCain does not believe in tax cuts. He voted against the Bush tax cuts and spouts the liberal class warfare "tax cuts for the rich" crap. This disqualifies him completely in my book.

While many social Conservatives have their abortion litmus test, I have my tax cut litmus test. He is a true RINO. I'd much rather have Rudy.

Having said that I like Cheney a lot and want him on the ticket. However, we must recognize that he is unpopular due to unfair media garbage. It is up to the Bush team to fight back and address the untruths and rehabilitate this great man.

O'Reilly's agenda is to make O'Reilly look good ... and if that is at the Republican's expense, so be it, as to him we are plebian ideologues.

He, however, is above the fray. He will expose our strident partisanhip and through him as "the crystal ball" we will learn the truth.

That is O'Reilly's agenda. Have you noticed how he bends over and drops "trou" for Mike Wallace. Did he use to work with him? What's the story there?

Does anyone know Kerry's SAT scores. I heard that they were abysmal.

Bush will stay loyal to Cheney and he should. The fact that all the liberal media are concerned with the issue and feel that this would make Bush more competitive makes me believe that they are running scared about a Bush victory. It is panic time for the libby media

I agree; I don't see much positive press out there for Cheney, especially since his heroism on 9/11 was so clear. He's much more experienced than Edwards, and his toughness will be an asset.

Cheney is an excellent VP!
He is tough, and extraordinary when it comes to running a tight ship.
He has not had any health problems in the last 3 years.

Now, an Excellent scenario to play out in the short future, would be if Cheney resigned due to whatever reasons, and Condoleeza Rice is placed as new VP. Then she can run for President in 2008. Or JEB Bush runs for President in 2008, and Condi is on the ticket as VP...
JEB/RICE 2008... sounds good to me!
