Since when are firearms legal in a national park? Color me sceptical about this story. As a former NPS Ranger, I concur. Unless he was not in the National Park and in an adjacent National Forest.

Yup. Yosemite, which is loaded with bears, has a sign near the front door basically saying no weapons of any sort.
Course I always have a pack with me when I wander around, so as long as you don't drink in public or make a nuisance, you're ok. I've always found rangers to be very helpful (I usually have a garbage bag with me to pick up junk left by the croutons)
